There are many 'four letter words' that earn kids a mouthful of soap. At the same time we live in a society where there are people starving, people dying of preventable disease, people dying from untreated illness due to lack of insurance, people losing their homes due to unsavory credit practices, and rampant profiteering by corporations (medication, military and 'planned obsolescence'). To be honest, words don't bug me so much. Your thoughts, please?

Queen of Yack (how'd that Jagermeister treat you?) - many of your fellow respondents mention that thinking is sin. When you put '******' , 'fellow man' and 'up all night' into your answer you caused me to sin. Bad girl.

To all - I am suprised by the number of respondents who state that words and deeds are equal in their impact (and how many put thoughts into that category as well). The difference for me is there is a component of choice in being offended by words (if someone says "Piss off you A$S) I can blow it off - if changes NOTHING, unless I choose to let it. Deeds on the other hand can impact me no matter how hard I try to ignore them.

The whole notion of "swearing" is ridiculous - human beings have invented words that we aren't allowed to say?!

Words in themselves aren't offensive, it's the intention behind them that is potentially offensive. Calling someone an "idiot" with malice is offensive, but affectionately calling someone "wanker" (British swear word) isn't.

People who take time to be offended by naughty words have their priorities wrong. *******.

sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.
this is a saying that i grew up with as a child, but the truth is that many time we can kill a persons spirit with hurtful words.
while I did lose my home with what some would be called an unsavory credit practice, (I refinanced my house with an adjustable rate mortgage,) and the interest rate escalated at a rate beyond what was in the contract, to the point that I could not afford the payment,
I was still able to move to another home.
physical thing can be replaced, but how do you heal a broken spirit?
it is easy to say hurtful unthinking thing, but once said you can never take them back, no matter how sorry you are for having said them.

All of it is still actions and actions can hurt. To say that words don't mean much is just as callous as saying deeds are the worst. Words sometimes brings forth the deed. What is truly offensive is people choosing to ignore it all and keep marching to whatever beat is playing.

Words and Deeds are equally as guilty.

Three words jump out at me when you posed this question.
1. Ignorance
2. Understanding
3. Complacency

Ignorance of a situation - being unaware that it exists.
Understanding a situation - seeing the situation for what it really is, and working toward a solution.
Complacency - not acting to remedy the situation when it is brought out into the light and fully understood.

It's the Complacency that we are seeing all around us and at every level that really "Bug Me".

I keep hearing people say isn't it time we do something about it. Well, isn't it about time?

Good question!!

I think sometimes that words hurt more than deeds.

A broken arm can mend and eventually the pain will ease you will say, yep, I broke my arm and it hurt but you won't remember how bad it actually hurt.

But hateful words can be played over and over again in the mind like a never ending tape recorder. And you will relive that moment when those words were said. And you will relive that pain.....

so I would go with words

Let us take this, as we should all matters, by Gods view. According to his scripture, words can be offensive, deeds can be offensive, and since God knows your thoughts as can they be offensive! What matters to God, as it is written, is the intention of the heart, and not the word or deed. For example lets say you are donating at a church but secretly just to impress people at how much you are giving, greedy for a blessing. Your thoughts are not secret from God, he would know, for example, your heart is does not wish to give out of love. For "God loves a cheerful giver."
Deeds, words, thoughts, and the intention of the heart can all be found as offensive or good.

Perhaps this world would be in better shape if they would study God's word daily and apply it to their daily lives, instead of only calling upon His name when things are out of control.

1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Words are just words and actions speak louder than words.
I might post all day long and say things like "******" yet my deeds to my fellow man are the things that may or may not keep me up at night.

Either words or deeds can be offensive. Let's work on being polite and compassionate in all words and deeds both.

The only words that bother me are racial slurs because they reflect a malicious idea about a certain group of people.

As far as swear words, they don't mean anything, they shouldn't even be considered "bad words".
