I have a Boston Terrier that was given to me, We took her to the vet and had a clean bill of health but at that time the vet couldn't tell if she was going out of heat or comeing in, but a few days ago she started bleeding so I bought a doggie diaper for her because she stays in the house, I want to get her spayed but I am not sure if its good to do during her heat cycle. Does any know whats best to do? Thanks.

Some vets will spay a b itch during heat, but it isn't advisable. The uterus becomes engorged with blood and there is a real risk of excessive bleeding.

B itch spaying isn't fun even when the animal isn't in heat because there are so many blood vessels involved. Being in heat makes it even harder, which is why it's advisable to wait 10-12 weeks from the start of heat to have the op. I think most vets would advise you this way.

While you wait, she should either be securely inside or on a leash at ALL times - beware of male dogs jumping on her!!

While she is in heat all of her female organs are swollen making surgery more difficult but it can be done. It is best that you wait until she is out of heat before you have her spayed. It will be easier for the Vet & easier on her. It will cost less if you wait until she is out.

Keep a close eye on her & don't let the strays get her. If she is outside you should be with her. A determined male can preform mirucles & a diaper will just be torn off, high fences either jumped or dug under.

I'm sure the vet told you that the heat cycle runs for 3 weeks. Get you a book on the breed, it should cover all the information you may need or want to know.

Hi, a dog can be spayed while in heat but a good vet would prefer not to do it while a dog is in heat, hopefully you have a good vet. Spaying a dog that is in heat can cause excess bleeding during sugery and also when in heat the female organs tend to be slightly swollen which can make sugerys difficult sometimes, also it slows down the recuperation time after sugery and can be more painful for the dog. So in the best interest of the dog best to wait until she is out of heat. Hope this helps.

The vets generally try not to spay during heat due to lots of reasons one major one is the risk to the dog, it may bleed excessively, i would call your vet and they should be able to tell you how long they generally ask people to wait , good luck x

You can have her spayed at anytime, but the risk of bleeding is greater when she is in heat and the vet will probably charge you more. Good luck with her.

You will have to wait until the heat is over. Then take her in, immediately following.

Not good to fix(spay) a dog in heat.Just wait a month AFTER her period ends and then get her fixed.
