I started jogging four years ago and I wasn't exactly young. I simply went to the park and only managed a hundred yards or so or perhaps less that I repeated a few times. I kept going every day and for quite sometime I couldn' t improve much on my performance. Until all of a sudden I begun increasing the distance and put together the runs until I could do five kilometres. For me the best way to start is to run until you can, no matter how short is the distance, then continue by walking or take a rest and then run again until you have enough. Then as you aquire more stamina you can just make one long run. As for fitness it depends what you mean. Before I started running I was pretty fit because I practiced a lot of yoga and martial arts, but though my muscles were fit and flexible my lungs were not. Basically jogging being aerobic depends from the ability of the lungs to cope with the continuous movement of jogging. Beside some people are natural long distance runners while others like me are better at short bursts of power than long prolongued efforts. Because of my body capabilities today I only run say two miles and end up my training by complementing it with a few short distance sprints say roughly of one hundred metres each at full speed. It suits me and I feel better afterwards than trying to do a very long run. But of course everybody is different and must find his or her own way. I've tried many sports and types of exercises and for me jogging is the very best physically and mind wise, and the cheapest! So don' t give up the idea of taking it up because it will enhance greatly the quality of your life.

I'm not sure what you mean by unfit?? But, put on some comfortable cloths and shoes and start walking. It can be as short as walking say 15 minutes away from home and back and as that feels good to you add a little more distance. And maybe walk a little faster. Jogging, puts added stress on joints, and walking uses the same muscles, without the added stress. One day at a time and you will begin to see an improvement .

Start with a brisk walk, and only 20 minutes, then next day try jogging for 2 mins walk for 5 and do 4 sets per day for a week, then jog for 4 mins and walk for 3 mins and do 4 sets of this until you can do a 20 minute jog.
Get an MP3 player with bouncy tunes on it and listen to this while you are out jogging/walking, makes it seem easier.

Enjoy.

Why dont you start by jogging away from your house for 10 minutes then jog back then increase the time you jog away for. Make sure you jog the first part and jog as much as you can of the second part. If you cant manage the jog at least you still have to walk back to your house.

I can empathise with your problem. I too was a beginner not long ago and what most people fail to appreciate is that when you are unfit , jogging for 30 SECONDS is all too much, let alone 10 minutes!!!
My advice is: Be patient, and stick at it. Your fitness levels WILL improve, but gradually.

Start by a fast paced walk until you can walk briskly for 1/2 hour without losing breath.
Go to the gym and build your muscles.
It is dangerous to start jogging before you build your body up to jogging...that includes your lungs and heart!!!

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)

8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, start with as much as you can even if its just 5 min walking in fast pace around the block, increase it every day and write down your progress - it will be a good inspiration, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
