My great-great paternal grandfather (or my paternal grandmother's grandfather, Robert Burton Dickerson), was a doctor in Lafayette, Walker, Georgia, during the American Civil War; however, I don't have any records telling what he was doing at that time, although he was one of the three men from Walker County who signed the Georgia Ordinance for Succession.

Curiously enough, two other great-great grandfathers were doctors at that point in time as well--a Horace Smith from upstate New York--and a William McQuerry from Texas by way of Kentucky. My ancestors fought on both sides of the War Between the States, and my paternal great-grandmother (or my grandfather's mother) was briefly disinherited for marrying a Yankee!
