bought a vga cable for my samsung HD lcd so i could watch online content through tv but it does not appear to be working. I read somewhere that vga was for analogue TVs if so why has my tv got a port for a vga cable (it is a blue colour port) should this still work or do i need an s-video?

Since your TV has a VGA port, it should work just fine. Many HD Tvs have VGA ports.
a) REboot your PC with the TV on. This allows the TV to sense the resolution of your TV
b) Tvs support a small subset of video resolutions, so try
1280x720
1360x765
Check your TV's user manual for more details.
VGA is much better than S-Video.

VGA is not acceptable only for HD TV's. Therefore buy s-video. Best Regards & veradisca! Neven.
