My 1 yr old scraped her finger the other day on a shelf. I washed it and put peroxide on it. It has been a few days, now it is red and swollen around the scabbed area. I assume it is infected, but I am unsure of what to do now. Do I keep cleaning it, or should I take her to the doctor? I have heard of instances where a little infection turns into something 10 times worse. So just wondering if anyone had any opinions on what to do. Thanks.

Thank you to the guy with the smart *** answer. I came to the computer first 1. Because it is Sunday and her doctor's office is not open.
2. I am a single mom and can't afford to rush her to urgent care and pay $75 dollars every time she cuts her finger.
3. I turn to the computer because I find it helpful to know as much as a can about something before I go in like a dumbass.

But thanks for your constructive answer.

Since the Dr's office is closed today I would have her play in the bathtub for as long as you can to get it soaked really good. Right before she gets out wash it as best as you can with soap and water. Dry it well and place a small amount of antibacterial ointment on it and place a band aid on it. Make sure it stay clean the rest of the day and wash it and replace the band aid if it gets dirty while eating and stuff. If you need to put a mitten on her hand children that age often put their hands in their mouth and their mouth carry many germs. Before bed wash it again. I would maybe just put a mitten or something on her hand at night with no band aid because it needs air to heal and night time is the perfect time for this since she will not be getting it dirty. The mitten is to keep her from putting her hand in her mouth while she sleeps. If your doctor is closed tomorrow for Memorial Day do the same things again. When your doctor's office is open if it still looks infected take her in. However until them if the infection appears to be looking worse or she starts to run a fever you may want to go ahead and take her to er.

Infected Cut On Finger

Whenever a person cuts or scraps their skin, bacteria or viruses can enter and cause problems. Sometimes, a persons' body can take care of the invaders. Always clean the area, put on an antibiotic cream, and a bandage. Change the bandage at least twice a day. Now, at this point, you should have a doctor evaluate it.

Keep it clean and dry until you can get her in to be seen. Is it possible that she may still have something in the scrape, like a splinter? She could also have a staph infection. My daughter caught staph from a very little scratch. If she develops a fever over the weekend, take her in immediately.
