Hello...you can try 2 females, but not 2 males, our females do ok, males have dominance & territorial issues !! At Petco, they are seperated by gender ;) Take Care :)

There are differnent breeds of hamsters that can stay together. There is a breed of hamster called the Syrian Hamster, (commenly known as the teddy bear hamster) that can not stay with other hamsters. Another breed of hamster is called the Dwarf Hamster and they can stay togher in the same cage as long as they are not a boy and a girl or two boys. They must be 2 girls. Ask the people at the pet shop, they will know more then i do.

if they are siblings, they should be fine. just ask the pet store where you got them. and if they start fighting DO NOT touch them with your unprotected hand! they will attack you!!
here are the steps for letting hamsters get to know each other:
1. put a mesh wire to split the cage in half, then put them in each section so that they understand the scent, but cant fight. then about every hour switch them around, so they get used to the scent. do this for about 5 hours.
2. after about 2 days, take away the border and see how they do. if they start fighting start the process over, if they keep it up after the 3rd try, im sorry but they wont ever get along

And the answer's still the same - you can't keep Syrian hamsters together! They're together in the pet shop because they're still very young and are going to be sold before they get old enough to become territorial. Also no way are pet shops going to fork out for an individual cage for each hamster!

Russian, chinese and roborovski hamsters are social and can be housed together.

Dwarf hamsters can live together. NEVER put two syrians together. The ones in the pet store are from the same litter, at a young age they are fine, but once they get older they will fight probably to the death if it is long enough. Hamsters at pet stores are usally very young. You should try gerbils, they are really cute to watch. They love eachother and snuggle and groom eachother. it's pretty sweet. Good Luck! :)

Yeah, the hamsters at the pet stores are in the same cage. There's about 5 or more in a cage. I don't see the problem with it, but I have never owned hamsters. I would suggest talking to someone that works at the pet store your thinking of buying them from and getting some advice, that way you know for sure and you dont make a mistake.

Hi, hamsters are generally happier on their own, as stated above Syrian hamsters will maul each other to death! the reason the hamsters in the pets shops are together and not fighting is normally due to young age and the weak ones have already been taken out (or died). I would keep hamsters separate, a good rodent to keep in male pairs are gerbils, they just need more space to dig like tank. hope this helps.

No! Never put two hamsters in the same cage. They will most likely fight and sometimes they eat each other.

It depends on how old they are, not if they're female or not. "females together are okay?" I kept two together, then they started fighting; one got a scratch on her eye and it was bleeding, one had a bloody cheek. When they're young, they can be kept together, but I advise after they're about 2 or 3 months old, to separate them. It is not fine to keep two hamsters together unless they're young. Hamsters at the store are probably not grown yet, and the young can be raised together. Hamsters are very territiorial, exception of dwarfs.

Try not to put 2 boy hamsters together. Two girl hamsters usually get along allot better.
