As a veteran of over 21 years in the military and many miles of ground-pounding my advice is this:
You can also soap the heel area of the socks on the inside part of the sock, use a block of hand soap that's been made slightly wet and rub the soap into the material.
Blisters are caused by friction from either too loose or too tight fitting boots. if you are a size 36 for example in shoes look for half to one size bigger in boots, as your feet swell with all the hiking.
As suggested soaking your feet in Methylated Spirits can harden up your feet (do not attempt this if you have any open cuts or blisters on your feet or it will be hot foot for you :-P
Trim the toe nails short a few days before applying the treatment, Never ever wear nylon socks, use cotton or wool only, polyester and other man-made socks have no give and cause blisters.
Carry two or three pears of fresh socks change when you get them wet, or after your days hike.
Also carry a small first aid kit with bandages for blisters, and it sounds painful but, it recommended to pierce the blister with a needle that has been treated in solution or a flame, and remove the hemoglobin (clear watery substance) inside the blister before applying the bandage.
With time your feet will harden up and this will become less of a problem if you follow the few simple rules outlined above.

an old trick ballet and other dancers use is to dab cold black tea on the feet twice a day. This acts as to toughen the skin.
Make sure your boots fit properly and buy excellent quality socks; hiking socks that are made without seams to chafe, are of correct size for your feet and correct weight for the climate.
If you do get blisters, lavender oil is very good if the blister hasn't burst. The Body Shop do a sage and comfrey gel intended to spots but works very well on intact blisters.

protect your feet!
invest in some good quality boots that will breath, keep you warm and comfy all at the same time. Berghaus, Merrell and Karrimore are brilliant.
carry loads of hydrocolloid plasters and cheap vodka for when they really hurt (you dont drink it, you soak your feet in it!)
Break your boots in now, so they are nice and comfy. They will be with you for a long, long time if you buy a decent pair.
wear thick socks, get the right size boots and tie them up properly so they dont rub. (invest in your socks too)
I have Berghaus boots, which have been up Ben Nevis (no blisters) Merrell flip flops which (once broken in) are awesome for hot weather walking and a Karrimor rucksack which has spent it's life travelling all over Asia, Europe and Central America. It is 12 years old and still going strong.

Walk bare foot at home
Wear the boots at home without socks.
Wear a thin pair of socks next to your skins, thick ones on top
change your socks during the walk if they get wet.
Air them at night before going to bed during your trip

Daily rubbing with surgical spirit can harden the feet starting now....... but don't overdo it.
When walking wear two pairs of woolen socks....talcum powder on your feet first...then talcum powder on the first pair of socks...then put other pair socks on...then boots which really fit comfortably over the two pairs of socks.........Boots need to be an excellent fit to avoid blisters.
Best wishes, Mike.

use surgical spirit - rub it on your feet. Used by ballet dancers to prepare their feet for block work - which from experience I can tell you is extremely painfull!
