How much do people sleep? Is it disturbed sleep? I have seen a few studies about sleep and all seem to conclude different things.

For example one says that more then 6 to 7 hours of sleep a night is actually harmful and will reduce your life span. 6 or 7 being the opium and will make you live longer.

Another seemed to be saying this amount of sleep isn't enough and that the more you sleep the less likely you are to be obbess those more likly to be healthier. Continual sleep is what matters and naps don't make any difference.

Others say naps are very good for you and the kind of Medatrian idea of sesters and then sleeping less at night is very good for you.

8 hours seems to be the time you hear thrown around most for opium sleep, and no less then 7. However the average at least here in the UK is 6 I think.

The actual amount of sleep one needs varies with the person. The better goal is getting quality sleep. Good sleep hygiene is important. The old rule was go to bed the same time every night and get up the same time every morning. Now the rule is got to bed when tired and get up at the same time. Use your bedroom for sleep and sex. Not work or study or other things. Have the bedroom quiet - no TV or music to go to sleep by. Do not eat, drink, or exercise before going to bed. If one does all the above and still feels excessively tired during the day one may have a sleep disorder. If so sleep disorders can be diagnosed and treated.

During the week I sleep 6-7 hours, and on the weekend the same at night, but often a two hour nap on Saturday. I can't worry about those studies< I can only do what I am able to do to survive. Without sleep, I cannot function. My Saturday nap seems to help me get through each week.

I guess it's different for all of us. Not everyone sleeps well either so I think it's one of things you just have to play around with. I have trouble sleeping and I need at least 8 hours, but could probably be at my best at 10 hours. I think peoples habits, age and medications also make the average vary.

A trick someone once told me is… go to sleep and keep track of when you feel asleep. When you wake up naturally (not my an alarm clock, someone else, etc) subtract the time and that’s how much your body naturally needs to rest. Don’t do this trick when your exhausted or burnt out - just regular sleepiness.

Ex. I went to sleep at 11pm and woke up at 6am = 7 hours of sleep is what I need.

Once this # of hours is determined you’ll know what time you should go to sleep based on when you’re supposed to wake up.

I hope this helps.

I feel best at 6 1/2 hrs, but OK with as little as 4, much over 7 and I am sluggish all day. Naps screw me up, I avoid them.
