Hi, The pet store carries a product called Pet Protecter made by 8 in 1. It's a little disk that you hang on the outside of the cage and it will eliminate the mites. Every time I get a new parakeet I make sure I get one of them too and I've always had good luck with them!

Most sprays are ok to use on your birds,get the one for aviary birds, [I have not lost a bird in over 10 years of using sprays] you should spray your birds at least once every three months and when you introduce a new bird to your colony you should treat it first,,and did you know that you should also worm your birds on a regular basis,,at least once every three months as well....???????You should also treat the cage inside and out and any toys and breeding boxes to eliminate the problem completely.......

First you need to clean his cage and wash it down good with disinfected. And wipe it real dry. throw out his food and check new food for crawling mites...{ I always keep bird seed in ziplocks in freezer, for freshness}
There is a powder that you can rub on the bird to get rid of the mites. DO NOT SPRAY HIM the liquid can get in his eyes, nose, and mouth. Which could kill him. POWDER is better.
You will have to keep the cage real clean for at least a week or two and keep his food clean - make sure he has enough clean water all the time...

Mites are a persistant problem, because the powder usually affects the adults. So eggs that are left hatch out later; you may have to treat several times. Also they are so small they can hide in tiny cracks so you have to clean the cage and everything as well.
If your bird enjoys a dust bath you can sometimes put the powder in that, but you need to check with your vet, and get something effective from them.
