The best place to start is with living relatives. They have details as well as anecdotes and reasons why people married, divorced, had kids etc. Thereafter the Public Records Office tracing birth certificates which show parents which helps find marriages and in turn their birth certificates. Other family members can be found using census returns . Once you get back about a hundred years the internet can save you a lot of time. Ancestry.com, familysearch.org, scotlandspeople.net can all help. Getting back to 1855 is very easy, thereafter using old parish records the way is generally more awkward. I recommend joining a local family history group and posting notices on internet bulletin boards. Alternatively - pay me a vast sum of money and I'll do it for you.

Start of with members of the family who may well know where people were born married and died.
then try ancestry an on line service and take it from there
This will get you back to the first English census of 1841.
then you problems start you will have to go back through church registries some of which are now kept by local authorities, trade union records ship passenger lists etc

Start with what you do know, parents names, their parents names (places, dates, etc., included) and keep going.
There are web sites to help: Roots, ancestry.com, etc. There are libraries with all kinds of books. If the parents, grandparents are born recently, there will be public records, including the info from Ellis Island.

Genes Reunited is the best place to start. It only costs around £10 per year as well.
