Ever notice how our separate Protestant brethren will say "the bible says" yet what they really mean is "my tradition of biblical interpretation says this".

All the prophets when quoted read "it is written" they never use the phrase "the bible says". as the bible does not have a mouth or vocal cords to speak with. Why is it that many Protestants fundamentalists and evangelicals use this phrase "the bible says"? Is it an arrogant belief of thinking the text supports only the one view held by them? Is it a cheap way of using the holy scripture like some stage prop the way TV evangelists do who walk back and forth in front of the congregation with hand raised holding up the book like an idol?

My Dear Seraph I am making a valid issue of this because... To justify its break from the Catholic Church, Protestantism has adopted the strategy of pitting the Holy Scripture against the Church. The result is a false dilemma whereby one is to chose between Holy Scripture and the "traditions of men"...the Catholic Church. Fifteen hundred years of Christianity and the working of the Holy Spirit were swept away with the cavalier and unbiblical charge that it is merely the "traditions of men." Once you honestly admit to this strategy as a Protestant you will be less blinded to the arrogance that goes hand and hand with this policy when a pastor speaks the words "the bible says, but Catholics belief this"

Instead of getting bitter as I continue to remove the veil that covers your eyes why not be slow to anger, stay calm and actually spend some time contemplating what I point out on Protestantism. From my point of view those opposing what they think Catholicism to be can be very hypocritical. I sense Seraph you've already read some of my other question/answers.

Valid point - the Bible has no voice, for it is written.

It's amazing how you will even make an issue out of this. I have often used that phrase without ever for once entertaining the idea that the Bible has a mouth or vocal cords. So why are you attacking a strawman argument? We simply mean that the Bible teaches this or that it is written in the Bible. There is nothing inherently arrogant about this. Rather it is you who are arrogantly thinking that you KNOW this is what we mean when we obviously do not.

Reply to Billy:

On the contrary I am not angry or bitter at all in my reply as I have nothing personal against you. Don't read too much into it ya? I'm cool : )

Christians do not pit the Scriptures against the church, but against the unbiblical teachings of the Roman Catholic Church that sees itself as THE church. Taking the high ground that "we are the true church" is something that many groups do too, and their common thread is that they always have something EXTRA than just the Bible. Think Mormons, JWs, RCC etc.

I think its because everybody wants to think that their Religion is the true Religion.. I think that is because most people are insecure, and have to focus on the word Mine. But in reality how can we be sure of what exactly the Bible does say? It has been translated so many times into so many languages , that we will never know how much has been added, or removed. I also think that the phrase The Bible teaches us - is how it should be referred to.... I also think that we are not perfect, and that the true word of the Bible, is to be nice, charitable, do not judge others, and do not inflect pain to others, and pray and give praise on a daily basis.

Why are you straining gnats?

I think the Bible only supports one way that our fellow brethren make into denominational-ism. But, the same thing happened to the Jews as well.

As far as the "the Bible says" that is a non issue. It is a modern way of saying "it is written" Of course you could just as easily say " it is translated" or "it is translated and copied from scrolls..."

I agree Pastor Billy; I think it is a reversal in terms, it strikes me that they have become so used to sola scriptora that they have for a long time preached their own little doctrines and these take first place and the Bible is just a secondary tool now.

Ever notice how the word bretheren has been co-opted by religious types. I want that word back. You never hear anyone say "My bretheren and I are going to pick up some hos, buy an eight-ball and get jiggy wit' it."
