My 11 year-old son wrote the winning essay as to why he's proud to be an American. Tomorrow we will be attending Memorial Day services so that he can read his essay, and be presented with his award and a check. I'm very proud of him.

When I was a child, Memorial Day was almost exclusively about military dead, not everyone. We Brownies dressed in our uniforms and stood out in the sun (I fainted once) in ceremonies that were run by the VFW and American Legion.
I'm not planning anything this year, because I'm in a new city (St. Louis, MO) and don't know hardly anyone here. But since I grew up, Memorial Day has primarily been a day when we have picnics and barbecues, a day off work and school. Since I'm retired and not in school, it's mostly remembering that the bus will not be running, so I can't go anywhere.

I have my 9yr old niece, and 9 of her friends here at the lake for the weekend. She earned it by getting on the A/B honor roll at school.
Yesterday we spent the day on the boat (pontoon), pulling them on tubes, and swimming.
Today, we are going out to a small island and having a cookout/beach party along with a few other neighbors & their kids. Tonight, we'll probably just watch a DVD and cook some popcorn, because they are all going to be pretty tired.
Tomorrow, we have a big cookout planned.
btw-It is NOT cool to stick a single 38yr old guy alone with 10 9yr olds!! My sister was supposed to come along this weekend and help out, but she bailed. I've been doing my best just to keep from getting duct taped to a chair!
Just kidding, they have all been great. Noisy, but great.
The trick is to keep them so busy, that they don't have time to get into trouble. Only real problem has been bath time, I am on a well, and the best solution I came up with was to just let them use the hot tub as a giant bathtub. It needed cleaning anyways, and they had a blast piling into it, since it would hold all of them at the same time. (Don't freak, it's enclosed & private. And I wasn't out there either)

In the UK it's just called the spring bank holiday so I'll be enjoying a day off work.

No, just another day for us. No religious meaning if this is what you are asking. In fact, my husband is having a minor procedure done in day surgery tomorrow so we won't be cooking out, having any barbcues or anything like that.

Yes, I salute all the fallen soldiers by drinking as many Miller Lites as I can without falling over.

Yes it does.
I celebrate those who fought for the US. I give thanks to those who were killed and those who survived. I usually tell every veteran I know thank you.
