actually no it isnt. alternative fuel that is on the market nowadays is ethanol or biofuels which still encorporate gasoline, not only that but they also are more inefficient than just pure gasoline and produce lower mile per gallon efficiency. also biofuels or alternative fuels currently on the market are misleadingly advertised as better for the environment when they arent. by the time the fuels that are grown through crops are refined and marketed they produce the same if not more pollution than their gasoline counterpart. there really is a hard arguement between any environmental gains from current alternative fuels. hydrogen as an alternative fuel will come online within the next five years will be immensely efficient and effective and pollute 90% less than gasoline. i think we have really just only begun to see a variety of fuel saving and efficient technologies come to market. there will be a much brighter future for alternative fuels.

Ethanol has less energy in it because the carbon chains from which it is made a shorter than the carbon chains of fossil fuel.

Corn and soybean ethanol that you'll find in gas stations today will not get you as far per gallon, but it will emit less pollution and is cost-competitive with gasoline. E85 (85 percent ethanol) will lower global warming pollution 10-15 percent on average.

Cellulosic ethanol from woodchips, grass and other easier-to-make fuel is being developed right now. When it hits the market, you can lower you global warming pollution with E85 around 70 percent.

You can also buy E10 in many gas stations, which will lower pollution a little bit.

Depends on what you call alternative fuel. Alcohol fuels still require some resources. If you think of solar, wind, or wave energy, then yes these are all going to be with us in some form perhaps longer than the human race will exist.

It is longer lasting, and it saves more energy in the long-run.

But the problem is obtaining and harnessing the renewable resource without affecting the environment. In addition, some do not provide enough fuel, or are not as efficient.

Some are wind, biomass, hydro-electric, solar, and there are new ones such as ethanol.
