If someone's there to answer, if not why bother. Best to talk to someone rather then leave a message. I would have thought that was just some good common sense really

That is the WORST thing you could possibly do.
Yeah, sure, there are places that are open for business on those days - but, in the REAL world...I mean the real professional business world - things are done on "regular business hours" - and that is typically Monday through Friday, between 8 am and 5 pm.
Trying to do buisiness on any other time (unless you already had a set up time to call or come in ... like for an interview or something) makes you appear to be less than professional.
And speaking as someone who has interviewed hundreds of people for positions...I would tend to want to put your resume to the bottom of the pile because doing what you are suggesting means you don't have a grasp on what is acceptable in the real business world.
Just as, I had a guy show up at the office at 5 minutes to 5pm on a Friday wanting to talk about setting up some business. Uh...hello....It's FRiDAY at 5 minutes to quitting time....no one is here (mentally...that is). Come back on Monday.
Needless to say, we didn't do business with him or his company. First impressions last. And if this is how he starts off his first impression to a new company...then it's gonna go down hill from there.
So...no, it is not Okay to phone up about a job on a sunday or Bank Holiday.
Oh, and here is another reason.
If you are talking about a bank....and you call on a Sunday or Holiday - you WILL get a recording and have to leave a message.
NO SELF RESPECTING HUMAN RESOURCE PERSON will call you back about a job you want because you called on a Sunday or Holiday. Trust me. That just doesn't happen (well it doesn't happen that much).

Unless you are really desperate do not on a Bank Holiday. Ring on Sunday if you want but don't leave an answer phone message, that way you can tell how that workplace regard sunday!

I think it could depend on what sort of place and job it is eg. if the place is usually open to the public as usual on these days and the contact person is available at work, it might be okay. But, if you are disturbing someone on their weekend or day off or their busiest time (on the weekends/holidays), it is probably not a good idea, unless they have said it would be okay (or it says in the ad). Maybe you could send an email if you are unable to phone up on the next working day. Good luck.

Just ring and see if they are open. It doesn't stop everyone else bothering us on the phone on Sundays or Bank Holidays. Good Luck

It depends on the people your are calling. Obviously, banks and government employees have the day off on Sunday's and Holiday's. You have a better chance calling Monday through Friday.

I can't see why you couldn't if they are working on a sunday or a bank holiday. Obviously if they are closed you won't be able to apply anyway till the Tuesday.

no, it's not ok,
but u should consider this:
1. is the person u call are the type who love their work too as much as you did?
2. is it really important that u should call?
U should answer no.1 then look at number 2. why? because if number 1 the person u call doesn't have the passionate to work like u did, then u'll be considered bothering him/her. the answer u expected will be pretty much dissapointing. if it's really2 important, that going to stake ur job for it, then take the call, if not then don't.
oh yeah if the person that u're going to call is your staff and u're the boss, call it, but best before, u should tell your employee about this kind of habits.
hope it help,

It is foolish tocall on a sunday or a bank holiday because you will get no one except security to answer your call . Thus you will not get proper information about your job

To me if the place of business is open for regular hours on those days I see no problem with it. ie; gas station, department store ect, they are open most every day so whether it is Sunday or Bank Holiday it is still just a regular day for them.
