I "tithe" regularly to UNICEF. I'd rather feed hungry children than fat churches.

Yes,absolutely. And not only have I always gotten back the money that I gave in for tithe within the month (in one way or the other-and this has never seized to amaze me!) but I know for a fact that He promised to give back much much more in terms of blessings. Frankly, with tithing I am on a roll. The blessings have humbled me. Keep tithing. However it is my experience that this is a very serious covenant to God.One time I failed to tithe and hoped to sweet talk God into understanding that I could not do it for just that one month because I needed to buy 'something'. I lost a similar amount to a mugging the very week I should have been taking it to church. I take tithing serious as does God. Try Him,but do not joke about it once you start.

Yes, I tithe - usually to church, but sometimes to Christian organisations / Christians in need. I've only had one period of my life when I've been really in need, and during that period, God provided through ppl in church.
However, I don't see tithing as an "insurance policy", more a thing of obedience to God - and it's fun to hear when it's encouraged ppl.
I've got other friends, though, who have more incredible stories of ways God's provided, for example, some friends were going on a mission trip to Romania, (I think). They only had enough petrol and money to get to the place they were going to, but they really felt they should be going anyway, so they went. They kept quiet about their need (although they were praying!) Towards the end of their trip, a little old woman came and gave them some money - she'd been saving up her tithe for years, as she felt led to by God - and she felt she should give it to these missionaries. It worked out that it was the exact amount they needed to get home. How cool's that!
"Is that Really You, God" by Loren Cunningham's a good book with testimonies about God's provision and leading.
You have made me think though - should ppl tithe if they're in debt? I might ask that :)

Tithing isn't necessary for Salvation (everlasting life). But tithing is an act of obedience to our High Priest & King (after order of Melchizedek), Jesus Christ. Abraham gave a 10th to Melchizedek.
My increase isn't that much, but when I make increase, I always give 10% + of it to the Lord & thank God I can. And God always blesses me financially. Whether it is to pay the bills, or buy what I need or want to get for others.
My husband is the money maker, but he doesn't give a tithe, because Jesus Christ isn't his Lord.
Fuzzy, the Widow gave out of her poverty (above her tithe (10%) & Jesus said she gave much more than the religious self righteous.

It's meant to be a thing between God and you (or me or anyone) whether or not they tithe, we are not supposed to boast of our giving but to do it in private. I can tell you that I have heard (first hand in some cases) of people who obeyed God in this way and experienced incredible financial blessings. Not all blessings are money though, God once promised to provide for all my needs and I have held him to his word, and never gone without. Interestingly, this is the only time in the bible that we are invited to test God, as God knows our money is hard for us to part with!

Amen, I pay my tithes all the time and even give offering unto the Lord. We are to give to God not to expect anything back either. When we give God tithes and offerings they are honored by him. We give it out of our hearts and what the word of God tell us to do. Sometimes when we give our tithes to him it dosen't always return as money back it can come in other forms as returning, such as health, a family member saved. Alot of people condemn money they think we are giving it to Man and not god. We are giving it to God not man.

The Levitical priest were the only ones God ordained to accept the tithe. If a preacher today receives tithes, he is breaking this law and putting others under the law. As you stated that is in Malachi...the OT, before the Lord, Yahsua, the Christ. After his death, burial, and resurrection the law was fulfilled. Now we are to give from our abundance and that from a joyful heart in no specific amount.
As for testing God - where does one find that in scripture? I believe the opposite is true for Yashua Himself said we are not to tempt the Lord our God in Mt4:7 & LK 4:12...and in LK 20:23, and several other places!
So why would anyone who claims to be in Christ tempt God by putting a fleece in front of Him?

Yes, as the word asks to "try Me now in this, that i will open up the heavens for you and pour out such a blessing that you will not have room enough to recieve it." it is the only time in the bible God asks us to test Him. He is saying "Tithe believing what i say is true, and just SEE what happens" and i can imagine He says this with a massive grin on His face because as He says in His word He takes "great pleasure in the prosperity of His servant."
I regularly tithe my ten percent. Even when i was not attending church for a short time i was seeking God as to where to give my tithe, sometimes He urged me to give it to someone i knew was struggling, other times, into a church (and you know its always going to ppl in need and worthy ministries when you tithe into the right church).
Every time i tithe, God gives back to me the amazing blessing that He promises to. Tithing, IS in the new testament, Jesus said to a Pharisee (rebukingly):
MATTHEW 23:23 "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone."
WITHOUT LEAVING THE OTHER UNDONE. they were in trouble coz all they did do was tithe, but they did not have mercy or faith, Jesus told them they must have these things, but not to leave out tithing either.
and if ppl dont agree with me, and want to twist this scripture in the new testament to suit there greedy wallets, then fine, but you cant argue when i say who cares if its there or not! God promises all thru the bible, if you give you recieve, if you tithe God can bless you financially a whole lot! then can He not only supply your needs, but even your wants. its not just in Malakye.
when i wasnt tithing, i had my needs met, but that was it, now that i tithe, God is able to bless me abundantly above and beyond all i could ask or think! all we need to do is renew our mind from the "God teaches us when we are humble and poor, a believer shouldnt be rich" to the correct mindset, where in the bible it promises many blessings, including financial ones.
God tells us we are blessed to be a blessing, this is in money too. when we have lots, we can give lots. The world is relying on the body of Christ to help the poor and needy, how can we if we are busy denying God's word promises and keeping poor, instead of tithing, and getting that blessing to GIVE to the needy world?
its a very simple system. It works.
The new testament also says that we are "partakers of the covenant/inheritance of Abraham"...... Abraham had old testament tithing and blessing method in his life, he sowed and reaped financially, His blessing was not just spiritual and emotionally, it was also financially, so unless you are not a partaker in the covenant of Abraham, in which case you are denying God's inheritance of adoption thru Jesus, then you are to be tithing, and watching God do amazing things!

Christians are under no obligation to tithe; rather, as Jesus showed, the giving according to ability and in the case of the poor widow beyond ability is what God looks for.
God prefers righteous acts, benevolent acts, the teaching of the good news to other so as to save them, and helping the poor, especially one's poor Christian brothers and sisters.
