A 17 yr old relative was on leave from the Army about 6 weeks ago. He missed his flight back to Leeds. He is still at home with his Mummy because he couldn't be bothered to return to the Army. Does anyone know when they will be out to lift him and what will happen to him? He was only in the Army about 7 -8 months and needs a swift kick up the a**e, but his mum won't let no-one say a bad word against him.

The army actually gave him a months pay at the end of April and he didn't buy a plane ticket then. He would rather drink and hang out with his mates. He thinks that he is going to get another wage at the end of the month.????

if he goes back to camp with his mummy or a letter from her stating that he can live with her when he gets out , he can apply to get out the army through his company comander. he has got until he is 18y2m to do this, they might just say goodbye or he might have to do some "TIME" in colchester before they say bye bye but the longer he leaves it the worst it will get , once awol , the police will have him on file so if he gets stopped for anything they will arrest him and contact his unit, he will then be collected from the local police station returned to unit charged, then released after doing his holiday in the glasshouse colchester.so i would advise him to go now while it has only been a few weeks because he is still a minor according to military rule ,he might be lucky and they grant him release. fingers crossed he does the right thing .

The Military Police will be along shortly and arrest him for Desertion Which is a Court Martial offence. He is only AWOL for7 days and after that it is classed as Desertion. He can expect to serve 12 months in detention barracks. He will not recieve any pay from the day he went absent.

from past experience with my husband who joined the navy and decided not to go back, the navy police did not come for him. i received a letter saying that i was aiding and abedding a felon and could be charged also. i call the sheriffs dept to find out how to handle this situation. my husband and i were not speaking at the time because of this. at first the sheriffs office could not find this info, once i kept explaining they finally found him in their national data base and told me to call back to a specific operator if i knew his whereabout or where he would be at a certain time.. which i did. i arranged a meeting with him at a public park, called the sheriffs office explained what i was doing and sure enough 15 minutes after he arrived the sheriff was there to arrest him. he had to spend several days in jail until someone in VA come to get him and he was eventually discharched-dishonorable. i have not seen him since nor do i know who they handled him once he was back at the base. i can only say cowards get what they deserve and it sounds like you, knowing where your nephew is is also aiding and abedding a felon. you do not have to give your name. but you should do the right thing. call your local sheriffs office and tell them the situation and that you want to help them. if not he may never get caught unless he gets pulled over by police and they run his name. do yourself and him a favor and call.

Report him... there is a reward for identifying AWOL solders. The reward and the travel cost of the MPs sent to retrieve him are taken out of his pay. So maybe it would be better to turn himself in. He'll be in less trouble that way.

well for one thing you dont go to boot camp til your 18. so he isnt awol as of yet as he isnt legally old enough to join. he is probably in the delayed entry program. how he got pay i cant explain after 30 days he is a deserter. and will be punished harshly when found

you say he needs a swift kick, your wish will be granted. When our neighbours lad went AWOL they didn't even wait to get him back to barracks. He got his first kicking in the guards van on the train.

They will not be out to get him. At 6 weeks he is still AWOL, even now if he contacts his unit...tells them he is broke and needs moeny to come back, they may let return without throwing him out.

After he is gone 6 months, he is a deserter. And will be entered into state and NCIC databases. Any cop that runs his name will discover he is a Federal Fugitive.

The Army does not send its people out to get deserters, just waits for the local cops to get them.

They have a large deserter recovery unit at Fort Carson.

Did he unit go to IRAQ without him? If so then he missed a movement and he is screwed.

he could return to his barracks and take his punishment rather than wait for the civil police to apprehend him, maybe he is looking for a spell in the glasshouse.

he'll be punished - I don't think its fair for you to judge him though, he's still young and it's very difficult being in the Army
