Well in all my life time I find it most satisfying in finding things by the oldest method of mankind, and that is to go out a buy a replacement.

Be organized in the first place so you do not lose anything. Always put your keys, the book you are currently reading, your eyeglasses, etc. in the same places.
Keep a neat home.
BUT if you lost something, it is in a place you do not usually put it.
Try the UP, UNDER, and DOWN search approach.
Sometimes we misplace things because we break a pattern and put them UP, on top of something like the refrigerator, a bookcase, etc.
Or, we put somethng on top of it, like a coat newspaper, etc. and it is UNDER something. Or it somehow slipped under a bed cushion, etc.
OR, we lay it DOWN - like on the floor.
So, look in NEW SPACES.
You can always try the prayer to St. Anthony, Patron Saint of Lost Items:
Dear St. Anthony, come around!
Something's lost that must be found!
You may then receive a bolt of spiritual grace that tells you where the lost item is located. Try it - it works!

you'll drive yourself crazy trying to find whatever it is, so just forget about it for now, and when you least expect it, THERE IT IS! (just found my dvd remote after 5 months)
if its really important, tear everything apart until you discover that it was sitting on the table the whole time, and then spend the next week putting your house back together

If you have a kid have them look for it by offering them a candybar or a dollar. Kids can find anything if they're motivated.
