Actually here in Canada we have great controversy because we allow seal hunting on the East coast. This year was an awful year for it. Before there were lots of seals, and their numbers were watched closely to see how many could be culled. This year was a record low for what was allowed.

There's a lot less sea ice, so instead of mothers being able to give birth on the ice, some are giving birth in the water, and their babies drown. Also they have nowhere to get up onto.

So at least in Canada, the numbers are down, way way down.
