flew to hawaii on a large airline a couple weeks ago and got a really strong headache right between the eyes upon landing. what causes this and how do i avoid it in the future?

That's a sinus headache. Most likely you had some sinus congestion. Take a decongestant tab to reduce the chance of that. On a short flight, take one about 30 minutes prior to departure. On a long flight, take one about 30 minutes prior to departure and one about 30 inutes prior to arrival if it's been at least 6 hours since the first. Or use a nasal decongestant spray.

Keeping yourself well hydrated during the flight can also help reduce the chances of congestion. Drink plenty of water during the flight, about 8 ounces for each hour. Avoid alcohol and anything with caffeine. Water is better than anything else, but fruit juices are better than beer or coffee.

I fly 100k+ miles per year. These strategies work well for me.

There's nothing you can really do. It is caused by all the pressure at that elavation. That pressure is actaully what causes jetlag, it's not the fact that you fly into another time zone.
