Everybody is guessing, so I will too. The pickup coil in the distributor is going bad. On that model if the ECM is bad, the engine will not run at all. Fuel pumps don't fix theirself, and fuel filters don't unplug to let you run another few miles.
There is a plug with 2 wires connected to the distributor and you can purchase a cheap VOM to test the pickup coil. It should register about 550 ohms. Check it cold, and again when it quits.

Are you noticing any pattern as to when this is happening?? Such as at a stop after driving for this distance, or as it shifts into gear...it sounds likely as a fuel deliverly problem...is it carborated or fuel injected?? If you've got a carb try cleaning that, your description of the problem is very vague if you can elaborate on it more I'm sure you can get a better answer...

Your gas tank vent may be clogged, and the fuel system is vapor locked.
When the engine dies, take off the fuel cap, if you hear a rush of air, you were vapor locked.
