I got the car right out of high school so it is in his name and he lives in another city so he can't go car shopping with me. I already have the transfer of power of attorney papers, do I need the original title too?

Auto tiling varies form state to state. Most likely, you'll need to have your dad sign the back of the title transferring ownership. Without the title being signed, the auto dealer won't do business with you.

Of course. The title is the instrument used to transfer ownership. You can sign in his stead with the power of attorney, but you need to title to do so. If he needs to send you the title, have him sign the back (or front depending on where they put the transfer in your state) as seller and have it notarized, then you won't even need the power of attorney.

You need the original title. With a P of A, you can legally sign the title over. Sign your own name, plus "Attorney in Fact" where the sig goes. It would be best to have that notarized, even if titles don't need to be notarized in your state. Have extra copies of the P of A handy just in case there are any questions.
