First off, disregard Mr. Peepers above if you're interested in an honest answer. If you look at his/her profile, he/she seems to feed off spreading hate and misconceptions about Mormons.
Fotomama gave a very good answer, to which I'd like to add a few more thoughts.
Sister missionaries are common in the church, there simply aren't as many as Elders. It is a commandment for all eligible young men in our faith to serve a mission. It is a choice for young women and older couples.
Most sister missionaries choose to walk, or get a car, instead of riding bikes. For the very simple reason that riding a bike in a long skirt is not easy. Just as the Elders have grooming and dressing standards while on their mission, so do the girls. The Sister missionaries must wear dresses that are calf length, which would be a hassle to peddle a bike in. But some do it.
There is also the fact that different areas of the world are divided into Missions. These are set geographical areas that are presided over by a Mission President. While the church has standards all Missions must meet, there are things left to the discretion of the Mission President. So some rules will be different from Mission to Mission. This will affect whether or not the missionaries are on bikes, feet, or in cars.
And finally, a large number of Sister missionaries serve at Temple Visitor Centers, which lessons the numbers out proselyting. You'll also find many Sisters serving at Institutes on college campuses.

When I was 19 I wanted to go on a mission but was told I'd have to wait until I was 21 and that if I was offered the chance to be married in the temple to a worthy man I should take it and serve the Lord through being a mother and wife rather than by going on a mission. I go married at the age of 20, under the cousel of my Bishop immediately had children and dropped out of college.
Females do proselytize but they must be in cars. They have to wear skirts or dresses so cannot ride a bike. Females are encouraged to get married and have children first. Hence only the *old maids* get to go on missions.

There are a few reasons for this.
-There are a lot of sisters who serve missions. But it's much more encouraged of our young men than of our young women. A lot of young women go to college or get married. Sisters serving missions is not frowned upon at all, but not a requirement either. It's a very personal decision.
-Most North American missionaries (and I mean Canadian/US) have the men riding bikes, wherever possible. My uncle was on a bike in Anaheim CA. It's cheaper than outfitting them in cars. However, in the Calgary Canada mission, most missionaries find themselves in cars, just due to geography...cities and towns are much more spread out than in SoCal. A missionary's area in SoCal might be several city blocks, while a missionary's area in Alberta might encompass several towns, several hundred km apart. It's variable to geography.
Now, this is not true of South America. Everyone walks or rides the bus. My husband was in Ecuador and said that bikes were impractical and cars were just way out of the question--far too expensive. And this goes for Elders and sisters.
In Europe, sisters ride bikes just like the Elders...I had a roommate who served in France and she was on a bike. Again, automobiles are impractical and too costly.
Most missions have a much greater ratio of Elders to Sisters. In my husbands "yearboook" there were about 200 missionaries, only 25 or so being sisters. There were a few retired couples as well...maybe some 10. You see them more in places where they can teach or do "service missions" like creating infrastructure, helping with medical needs, relief and so forth. The exception to this is the Temple Square mission in Salt Lake City, UT. All the missionaries are retired couples or young women.

Female Mormons go on missions as well. However, they go in their youth less frequently, so it is less likely you will see them.
I do not know for a fact, but I imagine that most areas that Mormon missionaries are assigned to that require bikes are given to men first, to ease the job of the women who go on missions. But I do not know for sure and doubt that it can be construed as "discrimination."

It is a bit hard to ride a bicycle in a skirt or dress. I don't recall ever seeing a female missionary in slacks. But, I've also never seen them in any country besides the USA and I know that they travel the world.

If it was a safety issue then wouldn't the female missionaries be allowed to have a car? Only male missionaries in my area are allowed to have a car. Here females do sometimes too ride bikes, but it is very hard for them.

There are many female Mormon missionaries.
They usually don't ride bikes because they are wearing dresses or skirts.

The sister missionaries in our ward have to ride bikes or walk. And it's not easy with skirts!
Most sisters are given a car, if it possible. They try to make the sisters as safe as possible.

Women are not encouraged to go on missions as at that age the pressure is on to have the second set of twins.
The LDS church is a male-dominated, male-run and male-centered organization that considers babymaking as the sole responsibility of women (undeniable), but other than that, they are to support their husbands, father, priesthood leaders.
Independent and single female members are invariably 'banished' to a singles ward with the hopes they will give in and get married, quit work and have babies.
I bet some hot babes in tight skirts on beach cruisers would generate a whole lot of new interest, though - male, of course...
