Subs and ships are very different in terms of livable space that is available. I've been on virtually every class of ship in the US fleet (CG's, DDGs', LSD's, LHA's, LPD's, CV's, SNN's etc.)

During the course of a single day you come in physical contact with someone else at least a half dozen times (or more) on a sub. I did not find that to be the case on surface ships.

The berthing and head space on a sub is very different than a ship. If the men and women who are serving on the sub do not mind the complete lack of privacy, then it might work. There is just not enough space for seperate heads.

For anyone who questions whether this might work, tour a modern submarine.

I also like the earlier poster who suggested that with women on board, the men might at least stop and ask for directions.

I served on US Navy Carriers when women were moved aboard in 1994-1996, and once everyone settled down it worked just fine and dandy.

However, having toured Permit and Los Angeles class submarines, there's just not the SPACE to provide separate berthing, toilet, and bathing facilities.

I just don't see it happening !! Though I enjoyed some of the other answers.

I don't think it would be a good idea, cause it would be too difficult for men to control their hormones with only one or two females on board, however it might be acceptable if it's an all female fleet

But then again, what's the difference. There are homosexuals in the service. I'd have much more problems on an all male submarine fleet.

Society always overlooks the fact that not everyone is sexually attracted to the opposite sex.

Yeah. Do you think men should be permitted to serve on Navy submarines?

Yes they should. If not, a submarine full of guys would wonder the ocean floor for days without asking for directions.

No.

I've been on several Los Angeles class submarines, have you? There's no comparison with a surface ship.

Yup. I think they should be able to do anything a man can do.They fight and die the same way don't they? I think they should let women in th SEALs too. I'm tired of America tryna play the sympathetic role and hold certain jobs back from women while the women in Iraq are strapped with A.K.'s and Bombs and puttin in work.

yeah sure why not, the only thing is that on a sub, space is minimal and she may have to be put in embarrassing situations. unlike a ship, you cant make different showers or racks(beds) for women. if she don't mind I'm sure the sailors wouldn't mind

Yes, when you become a soldier, you are a soldier serving your country....and yes each would have to respect the privacy of others while on board the sub (bathroom sharing) but other than that I don't see any problem with it at all....
