Is it a hall-tree? I've seen those...you have a place to sit down, on the bench, and can hang coats on the hooks.

It's called a hall tree. They were used in hallways as a place to sit and remove your shoes. The bench usually opened for storage, there were places on the sides to hold umbrellas, hooks for coats and hats, and a mirror.

Making them out of old doors is part of the current "shabby chic" decor.

My grandmother called hers a "hall boy". I have also heard the term "hall valet" used.
