In upper scale restaurants the finished plate is removed even if the others are eating. A dirty plate in sight while others are eating is not particularly appetizing, and it gives the person a view of a beautiful tablecloth without looking at a dirty plate. Etiquette says the plate should definitely be removed. The table will be well groomed without dirty plates laying about; that is called "class".

I think it is incredibly rude for a wait person to remove plates before everybody at the table is finished.
I have a young son who is a slow eater, and I felt that the waitress at Olive Garden was really rude by removing plates from the table. She was even going to remove my son's plate when he said, "Hey, I'm not finished eating!!" I realize that a restaurant tries to "turn over" a table several times during the hours of serving dinner, but I feel that it is incredibly rude to remove plates when a group at the table has not finished eating.
By the way, I have not returned to that restaurant as a result of the service of that waitress.

I think it's better for the waiter to wait until the entire party finishes with a course to clear the plates.
While I do hate to have my plate in front of me while I'm done, I hate the waiters who hover around me waiting for me to finish, even more!
And I know it may sound really silly, but when you see peoples' plates being cleared away as soon as they finish, there's this pressure for you to finish your course as soon as possible - after all, who likes to be the last one to finish?

I believe that dirty plates should be removed from the table as soon as someone is done eating off of it. I don't enjoy having to look at someone else's dirty plate while I am trying to eat. I also don't like having my dirty plate left sitting in front of me when I am done with it. The waiter or maid or whoever should remove dirty dishes as soon as the person is done with it.

I notice this in restaurants and while I personally disagree, that seems to be the norm. I am a slow eater; I enjoy my food, taste every bite and relish it. That's why when I'm eating out with family, friends or on a date, I have this pressure to eat unusually fast because I know as soon as one of the people in my table finishes his food, the plates are going to be cleared right away.

No need to wait. I personally like it when they remove the plate as soon as I'm finished.

That's a really attentive waiter ... he's doing the job you rarely see anymore and he's earning his tip instead of considering it an entitlement!

Let the waiter just do his job. Does it really matter?

Yeah, because then you won't just be staring at it until the food comes out.
