my dad has emphysema and he hasn't been told this, I think it generally depends on how severe it is, differs with each case

Well its obviously wrong if that diagnosis was made in 1994! Survival times will vary greatly depending on the stage of the disease at diagnosis and the patients lifestyle. A patient who smokes and continues to do so for example will shorten their life considerably.

My mum was told in 1970's she has emphsema still with us today. Quite active but needs meds for breathing.

Rubbish my husband has had emphysema and chronic pulmonary disease (copd) for more than 25 years the key is learn how to breath and try not to get hooked on oxygen keep yourself as fit as poss, yes he has really bad periods when we think this is it but he has come back to live another day,
I hope to have him around for many more

Keep active as possible and take Omega 3 oils, they have a anti-inflammatory affect, so will help your breathing.

My mothers had it for ten years or more .

She's quite frail now and has breathing difficulties when she walks further than her front gate , but then she is nearly 80 and she has no problem laughing .

She did give up smoking when she was diagnosed ........................well mostly ............................................i caught her last week in the back garden !........ my dad would have a heart attack !!!!!!!!

It cant be can it if you have lived 13 years since diagnosis?.
