Dawkins is clearly overstepping when he claims that religion is the root of all evil. The notion is ridiculous. Sure, it is the root of far and away most of the evil, but not all. Without religion, there would still remain some crime. The world would be much safer for all without organized religion, the source of the most and the most irrational violence.

Religion is the pursuit of God. God is Good. Evil is the root of evil. Some will use the old adage that money is the root of all evil but even that is not so. It is not that money is the root of evil but the love of money that is the root of the evil. Symptoms of evil are found in homosexuality, violence for no purpose, lies, , they are not found in religion. In religion is the need to overcome evil with good by finding God and receiving His Son Jesus Christ.

I`m afraid I have come to the conclusion that Religion, if it does not respect an Individual`s independant mind, nor allow its followers to listen to their own "Interior" in silent Meditation, and/or follow their own conscience, (which sadly is so often the case,) then I think it can be the Root of all Evil.

The reason why this should be is that Religion often falls into the Trap of being Power-hungry. It demands of its followers an unquestioning loyalty. In this way it succeeds in crushing any opposition with the threat of Expulsion and Disgrace, Mortal Sin and Eternal punishment after death, or even in some cases, a terrible and painful death!.
These things succeed in terrifying people, especially those who cannot think for themselves.

I believe that the Loving God (call Him, what you wish), guides us and speaks to us invisibly in thousands of ways, if we wish to listen and be aware of them. Moreover for me, God is Love, and certainly NOT something that condemns and judges us. That wouldn`t make sense. A truly Loving Being could not Judge nor Condemn! It leaves that to us.
Why is it people can`t seem to realise that?

Stangely enough, the First Commandment is the one that is most abused and broken!

Neither. It is reasonable to argue that religion, and specifically religious differences, are indeed at the root of a lot of evil, but surely not all of it.

When Christians have followed through on their religion, this is what they have accomplished:

They have put a value on human life, even from inception.
Christians have been in the forefront of reaching to feed, clothe and help the poor all over the world. Many churches had immediately sent volunteers to the disasters we've experienced lately.

It was Christians, not atheists, who started colleges and other institutions of higher learning. The original purpose of these universities were to educate and equip men and women to live their lives for Jesus.

The Christian founders of America have stamped their values in our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Christian scientists have marveled at God's creation and deduced that God is law-giver and a God of order. So they have taken it upon themselves to discover what laws govern God's creation. Many, many discoveries of science come from Christians.

Christianity has had a huge impact on the work ethic.

It was Christians who established the first hotels and hospitals, based on care for strangers and compassion on the hurting.

Good question, it certainly causes more pain and suffering not to mention deaths than anything i can think of, but id say for the most part its these extreme religious fanatics that cause all the dramas, Ive known many people that are religious and non of them want to blow anyone up, or harm another in any way shape or form , i think the argument on religion is very much the same as the argument on race, as in you have your good, and you have your bad.

Religion is run by imperfect men who may have good intentions but sometimes they make mistakes. All organizations in the world make mistakes.

The root of all evil is the Evil One.

Peace and blessings!

Well, obviously since God is good, anything related to Him is not the root of all evil. Satan and the love of money are the roots of all evil.
