Royal Canin is a pretty good food. I don't think it's the best, but it is WAY BETTER than a lot of the other commercial brands out there, and 100 times better than Pedigree. If you decide on Royal Canin get the Maxi Puppy 32 Formula for your dobe. The meat source in this food is chicken meal. At Petsmart is costs about $36 for a 35 lb bag, which is $1.03 per lb.

As for Pedigree, I would NOT recommend it. It is really a poor quality food. The first ingredient is corn which is just a filler and a common allergen in dogs. The second ingredient is by-products, which is the leftover parts of an animal that are not fit for human consumption -a very crappy form of nutrition and is the only "meat" source in this food -if you can call that meat...

One food that I highly recommend is Canidae All Life Stages. I feed it to all 3 of my dogs and I consider this food to be even better than Royal Canin. Not only that, but it usually costs less. I pay $35 for a 40 lb bag of Canidae at my local feedstore, which is about 88 cents per lb. The meat sources in Canidae are human grade chicken, chicken meal, turkey meal, lamb meal and herring (fish) meal.

Another food that I recommend is Solid Gold Wolf Cub. This is a great food, but it costs a little more. It's $46 for a 33 lb bag at Petco, which is about $1.39 per lb. The meat sources in Solid Gold are bison and salmon meal. This food also contains garlic which helps repel fleas.

Fromm Large Breed Puppy Gold is another good one. The meat sources are duck, chicken meal, chicken, fish meal, and lamb. I believe it cost about $38 for a 33 lb bag at my local feedstore -about $1.15 per lb.

The walking sounds great. You seem to be a very considerate owner. By the way what are you feeding him and how often. A Dobie is considered a large breed and you don't want him to grow to fast because this can cause his bones and tendons to grow too fast. Don't make him run too far. Also, it is very important to "play" with him. This will show him that you are in charge and it also helps the two of you to bond. If he is allowed inside spend quite time together. My male Sharpei loves to snuggle. If he takes a nap he likes to be able to touch me. He either lays at my feet touching them or if we lay down on the bed he has he back touching my legs. This is call "packing" and it is a great bonding. You still have a baby so enjoy him and you will have a wonderful companion when he is grown.

Royal Canin is fine as long as you are feeding large breed puppy. There are several holistic dog foods that are good

Bill Jack
Nutro ultra
blue buffalo
or
proplan selects

these are more holistic foods that you can still buy at petsmart and other pet stores. Make sure you are feeding large breed puppy in which ever you pick so that he is getting the joint supplements.

Have fun with your puppy

I fed my Chihuahua's Royal Caninin Chi formula for a long time until one suddenly stopped eating it. Now I feed Wellness. It's a better food human grade.

As for Pedigree.... it's far from being one of the best, but not the very worst.

Which type of Royal Canin? I would recommend it, they are a good company, as are Hills.

I would advise against Pedigree - well known to be junk food for dogs, and I'm tired of seeing overweight animals who have been brought up on Pedigree!

Chalice

if you are just getting the dog, ask what ffol its been on. try not to switch the foods, if you dont have to. check www.menufoods.com because i think royal canin was part of the food recall. check the website for any foods you may purchase

Yes. I really like Royal Canin foods as they have specific foods for specific animals... they have puppy food for large breeds so you can be sure you are giving your puppy the correct nutrients.
