i started off by doing about 10 then having a minute break then another 10... do that for a week or 2
then increase it to 20 and 20
right now im at 45 then a break then another 20... my stomach is defined now.
never strain your body if it can't do any more in the first few weeks, only start pushing you body after you been doing it for a few weeks, then let it burn. you'll see the difference after 30 days
EDITED: don't do it everyday, DO NOT DO THIS, it will damage your back. you have to leave few days gap in between, doing it everyday will leave you with long term back damage. trust me. do it max 3 times a week

Cardio and a good diet as you probably already know are very important to help reduce excess fat in the stomach area. To help firm the stomach muscles up sit ups are okay but a little over rated. You have 3 main sets of stomach muscles, the 6 pack sits on top the obliques are underneath this and to the side and under these 2 is the transverse abdominals and these are really the ones that help you have a flatter tummy. This muscle helps hold all our innards in place and is one of the main sources of "core strength". There are many exercises that cover this muscle that are far more effective than the situp. I have 8 of my favourite on my blog at the link below. Go to the abs section in the menu on the left of my blog and take a look. There are 2 exercises per page, to see the rest just click on the previous entries link at the bottom of each page. I have an explanation of each muscle group, how to do the exercise and a video so you cannot get it wrong.
You should also consider seeing a Pilate's instructor as they are fantastic at teaching you to use the transverse abdominal muscle and getting your posture perfected which has a huge affect on how flat your stomach looks.
I hope this helps, it is a lot of hard work, but well worth it. Good luck.

I agree with dimplez you should do as many as you can manage but try and beat ur previous day record by one or two each day as you get better. Theres no point saying 'oh do 90' or 'i do 50 a day' because every person is different, You need to learn what your plateu is and dig a little deeper to get results. But if you are doing too many that you can barely touch your knees and cannot keep correct posture then there is no point doing them as they have no benefit. 20 good sit ups done correctly where you can feel the pull in your abs is much better than trying to do 100 and not doing them properley. Also, you will have to do other exercise not just sit ups to get a flat stomach. It depends how toned you are at the moment. If you are a little flabby (and i mean that in the nicest possible way!!) then you will also need to do cardiovascular exercise to burn fat then sit ups to sculpt. Why not try a session with a personal trainer they know what they are doing and can write you a fitness programme based on your individual fitness levels and needs. Hope this helps x

The way to get a flat chiseled mid section is to attack from three sides. Diet, aerobic fitness, and stomach exercise. imagine a three legged stool, if one of those legs is missing you will never achieve your aim. To keep a controlled diet is inportant, aim to burn off more calaries a day than you consume and you will lose fat hand over fist, by doing reqular exercise you will speed up the process. Aim for 45 mins of gentle aerobic exercise 5 times a day. (its best if you can still talk comfertably during exercise for right intensity!!!). Finally you should do a mixture of sit ups, crunches, v-sits, and any other exercise to mix up your training. This a) keeps you intrested instead of getting bored with same old exercise, and b) hits the abs from different angles and so will help to develop lower, mid and top abs.
Do all of this and in no time you will be strolling down the beach, drawing jealous gazes from all those wanna bes who gave up on their mid sections.

Well it wont be flat since you'll develop a 4 or 6 pack but 30-80 would be enough. If you do 20 at a time a few times a day.

Youve got it right with the good diet comment.
Sit ups dont give you a flat stomach, they strengthen the stomach muscles.
Eating lower fat and less calories will be more effective at showing off your flat stomach.

sit ups build muscle they dont burn fat so your belly will look bigger.
to have defined abs or flat abs you have to have low body fat percentage.
the only fat burning exercise is cardio 4-6 times a week for 30-50min and combine it with light weight training.
