When you make your reservations, tell the airline (or the travel agent) that this is your first time flying alone, and to please assign an experienced cabin attendant to keep an eye on you and make sure you don't get too freaked. Then have just ONE of your favorite drink to relax you, and watch the on-board movie or read a book. If you have a laptop, you might want to bring it along so you can be playing with Answers while you fly.

If it is not just the air flight, but the entire trip that is making you scared, you might consider paying for a friend or relative to come with you. If that's not plausible, what about asking the travel agent to arrange for a tour guide to be your "baby-sitter" and interpreter?

No traveler needs to be alone and nervous, when the people in the travel industry are so very experienced with nervous travelers. They are used to this, and have mechanisms to deal with it. Trust the experts!
