rats are much more social than hamsters and get along fine together. It is best to get at least 2 rats from same littler and same sex. Males are better for young children. get as big a cage as you can afford. Rats need space to run around and play. They should be handled often to help tame them. They are super pets. All the best.

Syrian (Golden) hamsters must not live together. They are solitary in the wild, and will fight if housed together. Russian, Chinese or Roborovski hamsters are social and can live in twos of the same sex so you don't end up with babies. Rats are social creatures and must therefore live at least in twos.

I find rats are friendlier than hamsters, and cleverer. Both species need the biggest cage you can afford - especially rats who are highly active and need lots of room to jump and climb. A wire cage or glass tank is fine for both. Have a look in Petsmart or similar large pet store and buy the biggest you can afford! Make sure you do your research into diet and care before you buy.

Rats make excellent pets. They are social and can be trained. They live well in pairs. Same sex, preferably females can live together. Make sure the cage is big enough. I would avoid an aquarium, as it tends to not get enough air circulation and smells more.

Hamsters are well... evil! They are more likely to bite than rats. Rarely can they live in pairs even if they are siblings and never separated. Worst of all, if they do fight, cannibalism is not uncommon. (They will EAT each other). That is pretty heartbreaking. Save yourself the heartache!

It is actually very cruel to keep a single rat. They are very very social animals and it's always advised that you keep more than one rat... just make sure they're either both male or both female, otherwise you'll have hundreds of rats before too long. Rats can even breed at only 5 weeks old! If you prefer very active smaller rats, then go for females. If you prefer bigger, cuddlier natures in your rats, go for males. I personally have three boy ratties and they're lovely pets... veyr friendly as long as oyu give them lots of interaction and about an hour out-of-cage playtime each day if you can. Rats can get quite big, so you'd need a cage bigger than one for mice and hamsters... I don't mean ginormous, but about a normal person's knee-height and the ground area of perhaps a medium kitchen sink. You can put in hammocks, ropes, ladders, other levels. They love climbing. :-)

Yes, rats can live together. Just make sure they are the same sex if you don't want babies. They are indeed friendlier then hamsters and more intelligent. They are usually inexpensive. They need a bigger cage then a hamster, usually one that has a deep bottom so tey don't get bedding everywhere.

hamsters are smaller and dont smell as bad. a lot of work keepin the schreddings clean especially for 2 cause in 3-4 weeks you will have 12 and do on and so on. rats will really smell your place up due to size and they go potty more . the kind of cages are ones that air will circulate all around and dont forget a wheel for them to exercise on or the will go crazy. they are cute when there on there wheel or you can get tunnel and add to it when you want it is fun. hope this helped have fun it is only a faze you know! so enjoy it while you can and buy 5lb.at least bags of cedar shavings for them at the bottom of there cage and change out every other day to keep the piss smell away. there smart littel stinks too if you have time to train them. go for it everyone needs to at least for every child you have.haha.

Best to get 2 rats. They can live in any chew proof container. Large aquarium is best. Two of the same sex if you do not want babies.

Hamsters after they get so old start fighting and will need to be seperated.

Hamster's can't live together
they will fight and could kill each other (it is known)

Get a starter cage for a hamster
then build up to getting a bigger one
