A tattoo is a big decision as it is a brand for life. You need to first decide why you want a tattoo, then where you would like it. Now you can figure out what sort of design you would like and what size. Work with your personality and desires.
Search the net for "tattoo flash" and have a look at some of the designs/flash that are available. Maybe you have a picture or item at home that means alot to you? Also, TALK to a tattoo artist. A good one will make you feel comfortable, answer your questions and help you make an informed decision.

In response to your mother not liking it, I can't give you any advice without knowing her or the reason(s) why she is against it. That being said, it is your body and you shouldn't let somebody else decide what you do or don't do with it. In response to the actual tattoo, I like the idea of the scarab better, because it is a less common design than the others. If you get any of the other designs, I can guarantee you are going to run across other people with very similar tats. For pricing, if it is only 1 color and only 4 inches (that's what she said, LOL), I'm guessing it will take about 1-2 hrs. A decent shop will charge at least $100/hr. plus you should tip, so I think the final price will be between $300-$400. I can't stress enough the importance of doing your research. Don't worry about the price, worry about the art. Ask people who have well-done tattoos where they got them. Once you find a shop; look around, and make sure they are clean and tidy. Check out their portfolio and make sure you like the work. Only slightly related: I am not sure that you will be able to get that much detail into the scarab if it is only 3 inches across. Even if they can do it, all tattoos will fade/blur a little, so you have to figure that into the equation.

I have answered this question about 6 times now and nobody listens but I will answer it again.

If you get a tat put some thought into it. Pick something that is you and tells a story about your like here are some examples of my tats.

1. Is a black panther crawling out the skin on the inside of my arm it represents a nightmare I had as a child and a bad time in my life. This black panther killed my every time in my dream I could never win no matter what the only way to survive was to hide! "The black panther" was my Father

2. I have a koi with cherry blossoms and water on the other inside arm. It represents strength and point in my life where I will no longer tolerate anyone even those I love walking all over me ever again. Koi in japan is a Carp is represents strength this is the reason I got it.

I hope this helps you pick something that has meaning for you. A tattoo should mean something and not be something to get to be cool I can feel in your words your looking for something and I bet you if you think just a little more you'll find the answer to the tat to get.

good luck bro!

If you don't have any ideas at all it's probably best to hold off. This is permanent you know. If you just pick something that looks cool at the moment you may wind up with something you don't want later. Tattooing is not something to just jump into. I always knew I wanted a backpiece done and it literally took me 3+ years to get it all figured out and decide exactly what I wanted. At least now I know that I am happy with my tattoos and have been since the beginning.

Getting a tatoo just for the sake of tatoos is pathetic. If you're going to get one and you don't know what of, then don't. Think about what matters most to you, and go for it. I've been wanting another for quite some time and when I get an idea, I write it down. Occassionally, I'll look at what I have and see if I would still want it. It has helped a lot in my decisions.

Freddie...... You need to really think about why you want it. Where it will be placed. Not necesserilly how others will percieve it. But think that nude pinup looks great on your arm but not so great when you go to work and people take offence. What I am saying is it has to fit in with your life style.
So .. Basically what I am saying is.... Why What when How. And finally choose a good artist and a clean studio. research all the studios you can. www.BME.com has a section where people tell of their experiances and they call it as it is. If the Artist wasnt good they tell you. They also tell you of thier experiances of how others react to their tattoos so you get an indication of what you are getting into.

Well, if you have a sense of humor get "do not enter" on your ***. or "usda prime, inspected for wholesomeness" or "Pirates Dream"
If you want something serious for luck and good fortune get 4 small dragons on your back each representing the elements of the earth { earth, wind, fire, water }
From yourself, choose an item or items that have meaning to you and ask your tattoo artist to make up something for you and see if you would like it. All in All try to be arriginal. Your tatoo is of you and represents you. So if you get a naked guy on your arm well, think about it. Make it you and make it proud!
