There are different kinds of drops, some are only pain killers, some are to soften ear wax for removal and some are antibiotic to clear infection. I think is depends on whether your ear has an infection. Sometimes doctors can also prescribe general antibiotics and/or pain killers taken orally.
A pharmacist can look at what you have from the doctor and maybe recommend something better.

I once read about a guy who suffered for 2 years because there were mites in his ear. The doctors didn't know this earlier until a nurse look into his ear and discover the mites have made a nest there!
If you're living at farm or somewhere that might expose to small insects, you better get the doctors to check deeply in your ear to look for the source of your pain and you better be hurry!
A normal ear drop won't be any help if there are pests in your ear. You gonna need some kind of harmless-for-you-but-deadly-to-them pesticide.

A water bottle with hot enough water that you can tolerate in it against your ear. Put a towel on the water bottle . Rest &
2 pain killers as in Panadeine Forte every 4 hours . Go back to the Dr in a few days . You could have an abcyss or a burst eardrum .

I would recommend getting back in touch with the dr to let them know that you are still having pain. I would also recommend asking for a referral (if your insurance is the kind that requires this) to an ear, nose, and throat specialist if you haven't seen one already to see if they can help you to figure out what could be causing the problem.

See your doctor again for a follow up check up. Do you also have fever? Because fever is a sign of infection. Better yet, see a specialist (EENT). And do this as soon as possible because infection in the ear may spread to other parts of your head including brain which is very dangerous.

Garlic oil is great for ear infections. Pin prick a garlic capsule and drip it into your ear. Then put a hot water bottle on it. You will feel great soon!
