Aside obviously from waiting till she gets fatter. Is there any early detection method? And it doesn't matter enough to warrant paying for an ultrasound, she either is or isn't. Just wondering if there was a simply way of telling??

She has had pups before, and does really well. And of course I can afford to look after her if need be, I just mean it seems pointless to waste money on an ultrasound telling me she is/isn't pregnant when it doesn't overly matter, ie I would not give her hormones to make her cycle again quicker or anything like that, just wait till next season. Just because I don't like to throw my hard earned $$$ to the vet for no real reason does not make me an uncaring dog owner, just sensible.

If she was in season and was with a male then she is probably pregnant. Most matings are successful. She will go out of heat quickly after becoming pregnant. Her tummy will start to swell in 3-4 weeks. The vet could do a sonogram them to check the babies if you like. It costs about $50. Movement can be felt in 5-6 weeks. She will carry for 9 weeks or about 63 days. Before birth she will nest or make a bed for her coming babies. Feed her well during the pregnancy. Be sure to worm her during the pregnancy with a pyrantal based product that kills hookworms. Labor can take over 24 hours, but if active pushing occurs for more than 90 minutes she will need a visit to the vet. Most dogs do fine with whelping, so she should be just great. Congratulations on your upcoming babies.

If you won't pay a small 70 dollar ultrasound fee there is no way to tell for certain until 7 wks into the pregnancy when she will be quite a bit fatter and you will be able to tell puppy movement through the belly. False pregnancy can cause almost all symptoms early in pregnancy including , acting weird , weight gain , nipple enlargement and even milk let down. I hope you have enough money put away for the c-section if you have an emergency. good luck

'Is doesn't matter enough to warrant paying for an ultrasound'

Oh, nice attitude! Don't you want to know how many pups to expect, so you know when she's finished whelping?

You can take your dog to a vet to find out if she's pregnant, they can tell quite early on without an ultrasound. I really hope you're going to take the dog to a vet at least once during her pregnancy - and to get some advice on how to care for a pregnant/whelping dog and newborn puppies.

Expect a huge increase in food and water, affectionate and in talking. Also, her nipples will be enlarged for nursing. Try to keep her active as well because she may lay around the house more.

We find our females go off their food for a day or so 3weeks into their pregnancy, the nipples get larger and they start to thicken around the rib cage.
