Memorial Day, which was originally celebrated May 30th, began as a day to honor the Union dead following the American Civil War. Confederate Memorial Day, on the other hand, is celebrated on different days by different states that fought in the Confederacy. Of course, over time as the United States took part in more wars, the holiday evolved to honor all the military men and women who died defending the USA.

Memorial Day use to be called Decorations Day. But as far as I know it is the day when we remember all the people who served our country in time of war. I can remember when I was a girl scout, we helped decorate the veteran's cemetery where I lived and also marched in the Memorial Day parade and pushed the veteran's wheelchairs so they could be in the parade also, so our town could show our respect toward them.

I bet I can meet the challenge. The purpose for Memorial day is to honor with deep respect those veterans who have died in the service of their country. It was meant to be a time of reverence; not to be celebrated joyfully as the beginning of summer. Still, Congress wished to change things in the 1970's, to give long week-ends, rather than to memorialize and maintain reverence for significant times. I suppose they thought that a long week-end was more important than remembering the dead of our military.

To honor the memory of the dead during the Civil War on both sides and every war fought since. Yes we should honor veterans and we should also show respect to those who serve in today's armed forces. They are proud to serve their country and we should be proud of them -- even those of us who think the Commander-in-Chief is a buffoon. They do what's asked of them, no matter what is asked of them they carry out their duty. People who criticize soldiers, sailors, marines, and combat pilots need a civics lesson. Countries who have soldiers who don't obey their civilian government are called dictatorships.

Memorial Day is to honor the fallen, not vets!
Veteran's Day honors vets, not the dead.

NOW it is a day to remember all the dead.
ORIGINALLY, it was called "decoration day" and was used to decorate the graves of dead Civil War soldiers.
The REAL meaning today is to remember all the dead.
Do you mean real or original?
