Or can a foreigner never reach a level that is the same as an individual who speaks the language as a native tongue?

Of course it is! You may retain a slight accent, as do some others who are from other countries but speak English well, or you may not. Immerse yourself in the other language: you learned to speak and read English that way. Don't be discouraged. I had six years of French and spoke it quite fluently. The husband of a friend of mine, who is from Tours, France, told his wife, a high school French teacher, that I spoke the language much better than she did and without any accent. Good luck!

I think it's possible. Look at Vladimir Nabokov, who is considered a master of English, though he is Russian.

It's also possible to lose that fluency. My first language was French. I learned English at about 6, and my French is all but gone. I need to re-learn it.

I think it's a matter of immersion and practice. As you use it, it will become second nature. You'll begin to think and even dream in that language. The more you read, the more you listen to it, the better it gets.

I used to think and dream in French; now it's in English. The capacity is there, and it will come back.

Having a second language when young does help though. I'm able to pick up bits of other languages quite easily.

it's totally possible. No doubt about it.It just depends on the time u spend thinking, listening, reading in the language u want to adopt. The most important thing is that u have to really love the language to excel in it. I know, coz People say I'm very good in English, even though it's not my native language, but I love practicing it..........my advice is, read a lot, hear a lot, speak little........ Best of luck!

It is possible, especially if one has a gift for languages.

It usually takes a while, but people adopt dialects and languages all the time, especially when they move to new areas. It's all about immersion - to be surrounded with one way that people talk for a long time. (Take the movie "The Last Samurai" for example - he learned Japanese because he was totally immersed in it.)

nicely it relies upon on what you mean with the help of interior of sight fluency. which potential... which you will convey your self totally, for sure and straight away interior the language, and are able to comprehend-how something each and each guy or woman says in it, barring obscure cultural or literary references? nicely sure it extremely is a threat. yet as you reported it takes a great sort of paintings, immersion is a could desire to. some people do have a knack for it; they're able to attain interior of sight type fluency of their person years in spite of all odds. people do no longer seem to have performed that particular same fulfillment interior the distant places language. i don't comprehend if it extremely is becuase they matter too lots on their interior of sight language, or in the event that they're in basic terms incapable of studying the distant places language as an person. yet besides, sure it is nicely a threat. for people who've a expertise or who paintings very perplexing at it.

it is possible, but you need to do a lot of listening. watch tv, movies and get involved with people that speak that language. I'm latino, spanish speaker, but i've been studying english in the u.s. for almost three years, and my teachers say that I almost speak like an american. what i do is to try imitate americans. like acting. that has worked for me.
