I had planned on putting my daughter in preschool prior to kindergarten to get used to the idea of "school". Preschools in my area are so hard to get into at age 4 (not enough schools for the population), I put her in at age 3 to guarantee a space at age 4. Find out how your area is as far as level of difficulty in finding placement. When I started looking at the schools, I brought my daughter with me. She (and I) felt very uncomfortable at 1 school (the director was obviously not "kid friendly", and the students shied away from her in the hallways.) We visited another school, and knew immediately it was the place for us. We met with the director, looked at the curriculum, and visited some of the classes. We also met with her future teachers. The school always had an "open door" policy, and I was free to visit whenever I chose (as opposed to the other school where you had to call in advance-real red flag to me.) Just remember you will always be your child's best advocate from preschool throughout graduation. There are good teachers & bad. Pay attention to your son's behavior after any "new" setting. That may clue you in as to whether it's in his best interest or not. Good Luck!

Depends which state you are in.

In Queensland, if you turn 5 before 30 June then you start Prep that year and then go on to Year 1 the following year.

There are no hard and fast rules for finding a school. Visit a few and see what type of vibe you get. Hang out at the school in the morning and the afternoon and look at the children's and parent's faces. Do they look happy to be going to school?

well you can start a child in preschool as young as 3 and grade school at age 5. The best bet is to call around and just ask if you could come in and take a look around and have them tell you about there program. Most public schools have preschools in them and outside schools i recommend Headstart.
