It's interesting, I just commented on someone's question who was looking for ideas for an anthropology project on religion & art. One of the ideas I gave her was the rise in Christian fundamentalism the nation has seen.. to the extent of radicalism that groups like BattleCry are promoting. Also though, we've seen a rise in those completely against religion.. Richard Dawkins and others. Religion has always been a conflict everywhere.. so, maybe it'll balance itself out. Although it seems we've reached new heights of complacency here in the U.S.
As for the other users comment.. A state-based government would be great.. but that's not the direction the U.S. is heading.. I believe we not long ago reached #16 on the most-free countries in the world.
And whether this makes me look left or right.. The documentary Freedom to Fascism clearly exposes the direction our country is heading. But again, maybe we'll see a balance?

Of course not. As much as I would love to demonize Christian fundamentalists as radical, militant fanatics, it just isn't so. They maintain senseless beliefs, but they are not violent dissedents by any stretch of the imagination. You could spend ten years working with them and living in their towns, and if you never mentioned religion, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the fundies from the normal folk.
And if you think there can ever be a civil war in this USA, you are sorely mistaken. Our government is so completely centralized that even the slightest hint of widespread group violence would be crushed before CNN could turn on the cameras.

It could of happened before 1964. After 1964 it was illegal for the governors of their states to have authority of their national guard. So before 1964 we could of done that seceded from the union and used the national guard as a army. Now the civil war wouldn't be fought with militia men it would be fought by citzens with guns. Then martial law would be declared and it would be over in days. Unless someone with anti air weapons and anti tank weapons such as foreign weapons dealers from the black market started supplying us. Then it could drag on for awhile. But with just normal guns we wouldn't stand a chance.

I'm sure you're aware of the fundamentalist movement to get all of them to move to South Carolina and then secede from the union right?

No, I doubt that. It may lead to more state-based government, which is probably how it should be.
