Unfortunately I don't have an answer to your question but I just wanted to say that I think it is great that you are looking after a cat that is not yours. I am doing the same at the moment by feeding a stray while trying to find the owners. It is great that you care so much and are trying to help.
Whenever I have a question I ring the vet. They sometimes give me home remedies to try first before needing to bring my cat in. It could be worth a try...

You're pretty much right, this is not the place to ask about home remedies because people will jump down your throat, as you've discovered. For the sake of the cat, I will try to restrain myself.

Honey and garlic is not going to help this cat, simple as. Yes of course you can get garlic tablets for cats - you can also get these flea treatments that are often toxic to cats - just because something is available, does not make it safe. Feeding honey, which is pretty much pure glucose, will kill a diabetic cat, and daily feeding of honey will result in diabetes in any health cat OR dog OR human, to say nothing of destroying their teeth.

Coughing and being chesty in a cat is a sign of respiratory infection and/or heart trouble. Respiratory infections may be the result of a virus, so in that respect you are correct that antibiotics would be pointless as they do not cure viruses - however antibiotics tablets are usually given in the case of respiratory compromise to save the cat from secondary bacterial infection, something that usually occurs. They support the cat to give its immune system the best chance of fighting off the virus. I think we overuse antibiotics too - we ended up with MRSA in human medicine, and we're headed the same way in animal medicine.

Right, this cat is not yours. If I was you I would catch it and get it to a vet. They can treat symptomatically - you don't HAVE to have antibiotics if you're against, but you should be aware that it is very likely this cat has cat flu, or possibly a worse viral infection, like FIP, in which case he will be spreading it to other cats.

I urge you to do the best for this cat - and garlic and honey just isn't the best. You may not like medicines, but I very much doubt the cat would object.

CATS ARE NOT PEOPLE! DO NOT give honey or garlic tablets to your cat it will make it sick!!!!!!

Coughing is not normal for cats (unless ts a hair ball) it may be cat flu which can kill. Do not try to give it anything as 1) it is not your cat and 2) you clearly have no idea what your doing and just guessing. Contact the owner and get it to a vet.

No,no honey,no garlic either please!
Is the cat making short repeated coughs while lowering his throat to the ground or breathing real hard??

If thats what it is that cat is just suffering from what many cats suffer from which is bad hairballs stuck in thier throat.I suggest you buy food for it that saids 'hairball control'' and i think the best remedy,if he 's friendly, for your cat is to bathe him with warm water and a hairball shampoo. After you towel dry him comb his fur with a brush. If he will not take this, just buy a cat brush comb and brush him.Not only will he love it you will be helping him a whole lot!And dont forget the hairball control food!!

Many common natural remedies are claimed to have blood sugar lowering properties that make them useful for people with or at high risk of diabetes. Learn here https://tr.im/vhPA3

A number of clinical studies have been carried out in recent years that show potential links between herbal therapies and improved blood glucose control, which has led to an increase in people with diabetes using these more 'natural' ingredients to help manage their condition.

There are so many things that could be the problem, from something simple like hayfever, to either something lodged in his food pipe to cat flu, really needs checking out properly, being a veterinary nurse myself we have alot of cases like this and most of them turn out to be fine, it may be worth having a word with the owner!!!! goodluck

If you're sure it's not a hairball, then you should get some antibiotics from your vet. If you have cats of your own, then dont let it mix with them, as it may be contagious.
