First off I would find a doctor that cared more about your well being then your wallet. They do still exist although it seems there getting fewer by the day. Other than that I know the pain your talking about...woke up with it this morning with it because i slept weird, was able to work the charlie horse out...but the ligament (or tendon?) on the front of my neck is still sore. So I would say how you sleep at night would be one thing to examine. If these pains are coming during the day it may be something such as a lack of potassium, so examine your diet...eat some bananas. I would think if it were bothering you persistently then going to a doctor would be a safe bet...get a friend or family member to give you the number of a good general practitioner. I just thought of this but if your neck and shoulders are tense then it could put extra strain on the connective tissue...so get that significant other to give you a massage :)

I would recommend getting another opinion preferably from a dr that does not share the same office of the dr that you currently see. Ask them about your potassium levels to see if they are low. Sometimes low potassium can cause a charley horse to occur.

In the mean time in addition to the stretches you can also try applying heat to the neck. I have done this before when I have pulled muscles in my neck at times because of turning my head the wrong way when I'm trying to sleep or even just stretch.

It's an odd place for a charley horse. I would think it is related to your jaw bone, and not your neck. Purchase a foam cervical collar, it will help support your head, and the muscles in your neck can rest. Wearing to bed is fine also.

Do some neck rolls. Hold head to the side and then the other side. Massage your big toe. I am a firm believer in reflexology and that has worked for me. Read about reflexology on the web and you will see the big toe is connected to the neck. Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily. Sometimes we need to rehydrate the body from the inside. Most people do not realize how important water is to our bodies. Read about "dehydration" on the web.
