I have a Mini Fox Terrier (Jack Russel x Chihuaua) and she eats cooked chicken bones. A lot of people have told me that its bad for her and that the bone could splinter inside her. Others have told me that because she is breed for hunting, she can eat cooked bones and one vet on the radio said that it was harmless. I don't know what to believe!

My childhood dog used to get leftover food scraps all the time, including cooked bones, rice etc. He's now 14 and still doing fine.
But in my opinion, it's not really worth the risk. I give both my dogs RAW meaty bones, and feed them primarily on a raw diet.
Occasionally though, I do give them larger cooked bones from dinner (e.g. lamb shanks) they can just chew on. But I'd never give them cooked chicken or other poultry bones. Even ribs are pushing it.
But of course, this is just my opinion and advice.... clearly there is a split in opinions here!

Cooking will change all bones. Chicken bones are especially hazardous when cooked, but even beef bones can have problems. The cooked beef bone doesn't get digested nearly as well as raw - which digests completely. Particles of cooked beef bone will come out the other end. It is possible for those undigested particles to clump in the gut and create a blockage. Beyond the bone debate, rib bones have often come into contact with barbeque sauce. BBQ sauce is terrible on the dog's gut. If the dog got BBQ sauce with the bones, expect diarrhea.

From what I remember, cooked chicken bones are the worst for dogs. Not only because the splinter easily and can wedge in your pooches throat but also because, once cooked, the marrow in the bone becomes very dry and can also choke your baby. I've never heard this about other bones so the way I see it, it's best to err on the side of caution and not give you beloved pet cooked chicken bones...period.

I've also had people tell me, they're dogs and dogs have been eating bones forever, they'll then ask me "What do you think they ate before we turned them into pets, when they were still wild?" My answer is: That's true but I don't think they were grilling their kills over an open fire.

Do you love your little poochie - there may be opinions to support both sides but is it really worth taking a chance? I have heard and believe all dogs should not be given chicken bones. They can splinter. I also have been told and feel this is correct, that dogs should only be given raw bones that are not chicken bones.

Well, I read a lot of books on dogs and I'm pretty sure you're never supposed to give a dog a real bone only the bones that you buy from the store. I hope this helps.

I have never heard anyone say that it is safe to feed cooked poultry bones to a dog, for the reason you mentioned - splintering into sharp pieces.
I have giant breed dogs (St. Bernard, Bernese) and a lab who eat raw bones (poultry and beef) on a daily basis and have never had any problems from raw bones.
If you can find a copy of "Give Your Dog a Bone" by Ian BIllinghurst DVM, I recommend it highly.

It is indeed potentially bad for her. Especially chicken bones. If a bone breaks in a way that it has a pointed edge, it can tear her intestine. Or block it. Of course, this doesn't happen every time. When it doesn't happen, the bones are OK for her. But can you risk it? The one time that her intestine will be blocked or torn, might be the last too.

NO. don't give chicken bones to any dog.
the bone can splinter like you said, they can also cause the dog to choke. I have owned several different types of dogs.Mostly medium to larger dogs. I never gave them chicken bones, won't even let my cats have them because they are a choking hazard.

I have been a pet owner for over 25 years.

as for bones, our best advise is caution. poultry and pork bones, or cooked bones of any kind are strictly forbidden. they can splinter into shards that ca cause choking and serious damage to the dog's mouth, throat, or intestines. Any bone, in fact, onced chewed into small pieces, can block the intestines, can cause lacerations of the mouth and internal organs, or can lodge in the throat with fetal results. it is important to note that bones have little or no nutritional value. Its better if you just give your dog one of those fake bones that they sell at stores, plus they taste better and it wont harm your dog. :)
