The food in restaurants and hair cuts are already expensive enough and should cover a decent wage for the workers that work there. I am tired of having to tip everyone, I know I sound mean but when I am paying $25 for my meal plus drinks and dessert I don't like when it is time to pay and have to leave a $15-20 dollar tip for a small family dinner! It's ridiculous!

I hate having to figure out how much I should give them. How well did they do? If they were rude and I tip very low, will they think I'm cheap or will they take it as a signal of bad service? I always suspect they believe it's because I'm cheap. I hate it when people think I'm cheap so even when the service is bad I still tip normally. But of course, sometimes they get accostomed to 20-25% over-tipping and then they think 7-10% is cheap, but it's actually standard.

I've travelled to other countries where there is no tipping. The service was the same (many times it was better) and I didn't have to go through this nonsense. Dining out and taking cabs was like heaven without the tipping.

If there was no tipping, then the food prices would be a little higher. I'd prefer that instead of tipping.

"Grendel: We don't forget those who forget us...I have seen many a loogie added to cheap people's food in my life. IT HAPPENS EVERYWHERE.You may not taste it, but it IS there."

Which pretty much justifies why you got a low or zero tip. You should be in jail also.

I use to be a bartender and there is no rule that says you "have" to leave a tip. A tip is to show gratuity and there is no set amount. Leave only what you can afford. If you can't afford to leave a tip, then don't. There have been many times when regulars would come into the bar and leave tips, but sometimes they didn't, just depending on if they had it or not. Also not everyone in the world is rich and should not have to stay home and cook just because they can't afford the tip. The waitresses feel that they only earn minimum wage and expect to be tipped, but do they ever stop and ask their customers where they work and what their wages are. Some of the customers only make minimum wage too, but this does not mean that they should stay home because of it.

I think that tipping is taking the place of the wages the employer should be paying their employees.
Since the employers cheat the waitresses, bus boys and cooks out of an honest days pay we the customers are stuck making up the difference through tipping.
Waitresses work very hard I know because I used to do it and they only make minimum wage and without tips they would starve to death.
They also have to share their tips in most cases with the bus boys and the cooks and they have to pay taxes on their tips as well.
So I still tip knowing that the waitresses rely on it to support themselves because the restaurant owner doesn't want to pay them what their worth.
But if everyone stopped tipping maybe the waitresses would quit to find a better paying job and the restaurant owners would have to offer better pay to attract new help.
Or maybe they would refuse out of ignorance and just close down their restaurants.
My best friends boyfriend used to call her job "Pan handling for tips" when she was waitressing at Denny's.
And she would laugh and tell him "At least it pays the bills".

Where in the H...do you eat that requires a twenty-five dollar tip. Here in the South Land if the party is over 15 partons they automatic add 15% which is not enough. I eat alone always and will tip in the 30 to 40% bracket. I always have the same waitress. If they see me coming from the parking lot my table is ready when I arrive, and so is my drink. They never give me a menu as I know it by heart. My Lord a $200.00 tab with a 20% tip is not but $40.00.
By me being single, and use to be in the food business. It is amazing what a 50% tip will get you in a few months. The waitress that is a friend of mine will make no less than $1000.00 per-week, in this small community restaurant. Why?
She is fast, she is good, you never have to ask for more tea, coffee, or anything. There are five in this restaurant, and they each have their customers that request them. That is nice. But no one will beat the one waitress that is the most popular.
$1000.00 per week think about it. (cash) This does not include their salary.

And on an ending note this restaurant does not even serve "Liquor".

I don't enjoy tipping. But I do it. I don't mind for restaurants as much since they only pay waitresses a couple of dollars an hour. It's so you can decide if they have earned their wage for the time they waited on you. I can't stand having to tip delivery drivers. They sometime charge you for the delivery and then you're suppose to tip. And, the amount people tip them is very high for what they do.

I admit to hate tipping. Why? If I don't get a good service, then why should I give a reward. I will tip if the waitress gives a good service. Sometimes they are so frustrated at their job because of hard work and low wages, so they show bad attitudes. One time, I had made an order on a Mexican Restaurant that were not made clear/informed/or write on to the cook. This caused me a very bad sickness to my stomach. I told the waitress. So I didn't tip the girl...guess what she had said to me? We don't need you as a customer. I end up sick in the hospital because of an allergic reaction to the food ingredient. Of course, I had never been back. Anyways, I should of listen to those who says that Mexican cooks are not to trust on. Though, I do tip to those who deserve it. This depend on the amount expend on dinner (10%). If the waitress give a good service, she gets good tip. If she/he is friendly and gives excellent service, then her/his tip will be excellent.

Me too! I check first if the tax and service charge is in the receipt so I just add a minimum. But if not, I try not to be too mean. Hey, if tipping is an excuse to say the waiters are just working so do I !! But you know you gotta recognize a job well done/a good service so for those -i tip well.

Me. I think tipping should be a reward for a job well done, not something the waiter or the cashier is simply entitled to. Restaraunts should just pay their employees more, raise prices, and be done with it. I can respect somebody who asks for payment for a service, but this mandatory volunteerism we have in our culture where you're expected to give something but pretend you're doing it out of pure generousity gets on my nerves. There's something so dishonest about it.

It doesn't cover a decent wage, usually around 3 dollars an hour. The tips are how these people make there money! If your too cheap to tip, you should stay home.

OK so......
1) If you do not want to tip accordingly, why don't you just go shopping, cook and clean-up after your own meal?
2) If the restaurant owners paid us what we are worth, a burger or bacon and eggs would cost you $20 !!
3) If we all went out and got "better jobs", can you imagine what the level of service would be like everywhere, with all the newbies at it and never anyone with any real experience or professionalism????
4) I live in Cali where the min wage is $7.50/hr but if I really wanted to earn only that much I could work retail and deal with ONE customer at a time !!!!!
5) DUH !! Don't be so cheap and try to justify it to the masses, it's really just ignorance or arrogance!!
6) And YES we do remember your face if you return a 2nd time to the same place......;-P..................
