I'm not sure, but given that kiwi law comes from England you may find that the charge is burglary, or unlawfully entering a building, house, ship or aircraft. You will find with burglary that there is a number of things to fit the charge before the defender has committed a crime. e.g House including a room, building, ship, aircraft must have an owner or is legally occupied + unlawfully entering or the use an object of some kind to enter the above + to commit a crime of any kind whatever it may be is burglary. People with jobs are forced to commit burglary to sell the items taken for money.

The majority of times I've seen it, it's to pay for a drug habit. They've spent all their money, all of their families' money, so they steal stuff from other people and dump it at pawn shops or on the street.

Alot of times because it gives them an adrenaline rush and they become addicted to it. Some people steal for food or because they have no choice but the vast majority are doing it for the rush.

They could be in need or have a drug habit that they are trying to provide for. Also their is the occasional person who gets a thrill from theft.
