He is 3 & has had the spots for 4 days now. He's completely well in himself just covered in spots.
I've been promising him all week I'd take him for his 1st trip to the cinema to watch Shrek 3.
He's had to watch for the last year while I took his older bro to the cinema desparetely wanting to come with us but hasn't been old enough.
He's been very excited since last weekend about going & now the chicken pox have come on!
Is it wrong to take him?

as long as the spots are scabbed over (all of them) then he's fine to go anywhere as its not contagious once the scabs have formed, its most contagious just b4 they come out in the spots and a couple ov days after.
i worked in a private day nursery and as long as the spots were covered with scabs then they could return to nursery.
enjoy the film :)

If you have any doubt in your mind, then you know the answer already. If he's covered in spots, he's infectious. The seat he sits on will infect someone else, and you, personally, will be responsible for someone else getting it. Chicken pox can be very harmful to pregnant women and their unborn children - suppose a pregnant woman comes in for the next show, and sits in the seat where your son was?

I realize that you want your 3 year old to enjoy the movies, but really, this is not right. He can wait a little longer.

it's wrong to take him.
other people may catch chicken pox or shingles from him.
other people may not be as strong as your boy.

he's only 3. He has plenty of time to go to the cinema.
he also needs to learn that sometimes we can't always do the things we want to do because sometimes other things get in the way.

Explain to him gently that you don't want other people to get chicken pox too. Rent another video from blockbusters and make some microwave popcorn (they sell it in the supermarket) or heat some popping corn (from the health food shop) in a saucepan and a tablespoon of oil (remember to put the lid on the pan!)

he will enjoy this just as much. You can make it into a fun activity. You can take him to the cinema next week.

He is still contagious until all of the spots scab over.

Keep in mind that in a healthy person chicken pox is not that dangerous, but in someone with a depressed immune system such as those with HIV, people that have received organ transplants, and those undergoing chemotherapy for cancer the chicken pox is potentially life threatening.

How about renting a DVD for tonight and going to see Shrek another time?

I don't think that is such a great idea. It just seems a little inconsiderate to others. I think you should wait until his chicken pox are gone. I'm sure Shrek 3 will be in theaters for a while.

Chicken pox spreads very easily--more than 90% of brothers and sisters catch it! It may be transmitted from 24 hours before the rash appears up to 6 days after. It is spread by droplets from the mouth or throat or by direct contact with contaminated articles of clothing. It is not spread by dry scabs. The incubation period is 10 to 21 days.Chicken pox leads to lifelong immunity with rare exceptions. Keep in mind that children who have cancer may be at the movie theater and chicken pox could make them sicker. The best thing to do is go rent a movie and buy your son a toy or something to console him and try to explain why he will have to wait to see Shrek 3. I hope your son feels better soon.

Chicken pox is contagious one week before the spots appear, during the incubation period (1-3 weeks). Once ALL the spots have scabbed over, it's no longer contagious.

Out of consideration for others you should not take him to the cinema.

Excited he may be but wait until he is fully recovered for the sake of the other children or the adults who don't want shingles.

If he is well and can go out you can take him only and only if the spots he has are now crusted which is not likely by 4 days but by 7 days. Anyways if they are crusted take him otherwise he could transmit the virus to any child who hasn't had chickenpox.
