The soul, according to many religious and philosophical traditions, is the self-aware essence unique to a particular living being. In these traditions the soul is thought to incorporate the inner essence of each living being, and to be the true basis for sapience. It is believed in many cultures and religions that the soul is the unification of one's sense of identity. Souls are usually (but not always as explained below) considered to be immortal and to exist before their incarnation in flesh.
The concept of the soul has strong links with notions of an afterlife, but opinions may vary wildly, even within a given religion, as to what may happen to the soul after the death of the body. Many within these religions and philosophies see the soul as immaterial, while others consider it to possibly have a material component, and some have even tried to establish the mass (or weight) of the soul.

Your soul, my friend is you. It is your essence, it is who you are.
You (your soul) only occupies a shell (your body) Your body belongs to god, he gave it to you to use. Not to keep. He says you must care for it. Thats why drug abuse, and drinking and smoking and overeating and not excersizing and cleansing are all mini sins. Because they violate the "lease agreement" between you and your maker. That is also why the religions out there believe that when the body dies the soul lives on. Perhaps in some other dimension, perhaps in god's heavan. Whatever your faith believes.
Thats why it important not to judge people by how they look, because inside that case can be the most beautiful and wonderful soul. Thats why men who chase womwn based on their bodily appearance seldom find happiness. Because sometimes the most beautiful case can contain the ugliest most horrible soul.
Your soul is who you are, who you have always been and will always be. Its who you must learn to love and respect first and foremost, and then go out into the world to find another like you.

LOL I was on a soul kick last week and I just picked a best answer for this same question.
I think a soul is your entire spirituality. Your conciousness of yourself and God. Related to choices of good versus evil. It is your soul which communicates with God in the spirit realm.

The soul is the portion of man that decays. It is the structure, or physical shell of a man....
a living soul, is that which the soul is inhabited by the spirit.
God formed man out of the dust of the ground, and so... man be.... came.....
a living soul.......
The "living" portion is that which is breathed within it..... it is the spirit.... the spirit or the "living" thing, is the image of God because it is eternal.......
We look out of it at the world around us.... that "living" portion reasons and feels.....
Otherwise, the soul, is but an empty shell........ in the shape of a man.....

soul is a gift from God which made us different with the other creations. The other thing made us different with the other creation is spirit and mind.
In Indonesian, soul means jiwa it's have a relation with phsycology.

The essence of man's existence here and now. It is the spiritual nature of man considered in relation with God, regarded as immortal, separable from the body at death, and susceptible to happiness or misery in a future state.
It is also considered as the emotional nature in humankind as distinguished from the mind or intellect. Therefore it's the depth and sincerity of feeling, or the ability to convey this effectively.
