I have a question: how can you gain 40 pounds in three years?
Did you have a baby?
The best way to lose weight after having a baby is to breastfeed.
When you breastfeed, you can eat whatever you want and you just look at your fat melting away as your baby is growing.
Otherwise, 40 pounds = 140,000 calories (3,500 per pound).
Let’s say you’re committed and you want to lose the weight in a year. You would have to watch your diet so as not to eat more than 1,200/day and you would have to exercise enough to spend those 140,000 calories divided by 365 = 383 calories a day.
So for a whole year, eat very little (1,200/day) and exercise a lot (383/day).
Or you could do it in two year and exercise twice as little or eat a little more.

To be realistic it is going to take some time to take off 40 pounds, but I do think that it's possible. I gained weight during college and just now am trying to lose some of it, but it's only about 10 pounds. Anyway, I started the South Beach Diet program and it really works! I lost about 8 pounds within the first two weeks. Exercising for about 20 minutes everyday, and not totally wearing yourself down is key. Just do some resistance training and cardio every week while following a good diet program, you are going to be on track to loose that weight within 4 months or so. But diet is a really big part of losing weight. 70% is diet and 30% is exercise, just don't do a lot of weight training with heavy weights because you will gain muscle mass which will make you heavier.

I was 140 pounds in High School, Now I'm 220 and I garden everyday, ride bicycles up mountains and to work, etc., but I am at a loss how to lose even 20 pounds if I could.
Going back to high schiool weight is an unrealistic goal for me. To tell you the truth. I was still growing then, and slightly shorter than now.
How to arrive at it? What is my diet? I'm a Vegetarian , and the scale still stays firmly at 220.
I would look like a million bucks just at 200. To go back to even that, would mean a lot more bike riding and a lot less eating. To go to High school weight would mean for me to lose 80 pounds. I'll settle for 20 . That's exactly 2/8 (or 1/4 th) what it would take for me to be High school weight.
For you, it would be best at least to first just try for 1/4th of that with what you want to lose, which would be 10 pounds.
No substitute for simply more activity, taking up a sport combining that with no junk foods whatsoever, and lots of really fresh salady foods, instead like fruits and vegetables, teas. Less Sugar. Less milk. Less meat.
The best time to burn fat is in the morning before you've eaten, with a walk or exercises, even a work out. Make it a habit.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.
I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.
It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.
Get started today!

i weigh 206 lbs, comparable top, with a nerdy-white-boy build. I certainly have been exercising 5 days a week for a month and a one million/2, 40 min to one million hr on a daily basis (working, swimming, and a few strange device interior the cardio room) and have not lost a single ounce. I minimize approximatly 2000 energy a week out of my food habitual by not ingesting beer throughout the time of the week. i'm going to be development muscle, however, that's heavier than fat. So i don't probably understand.

over the fall/winter i got "lazy", drank a lot and ate a lot. i was 182 lbs, which is big for me. i started my exercise routine again, running 3 times per week, about 5 miles each run, and lifting weights for an hour each of those 3 days. i also started taking an energy booster/fat burner called Rev-XP [can get it from Vitamin World or GNC]. its basically a bunch of natural herbs that increase your energy and metabolism and help burn more calories faster.
i lost nearly 20 lbs in just 4 weeks doing that, and got my body back to how it normally is, so that i could "breathe again".
like i said, i exercised 3 days a week and took 4 days off, basically every other day. if you can commit to this, you will be on your way.
i hope this has helped best answer your question. good luck. =)

That's a little worrysome. I guess 40 lbs could happen over a looong period of time..but that's a lot of weight. You aren't that much over weight but if you really have a desire to drop a few lbs then just maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating right and working out when you get the chance. No need to go overboard but when you eat better and do more you'll feel better and see the lbs slowly start to shed. Good luck to ya=)

its healthy to lose 1-2lbs a week.
dont look at the scale - what matters more is body fat percentage. plus - muscle weights more than fat.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

All women put on SOME fat layers as they age, that is to be expected and normal hormone caused growth. If you body TRULY wants to get right back to the 110 level, it will. Another answer in here is correct. Poundage adds on through small actions over time...butter, margarine, fat meats, coffee creamers and cream, rich things, lots of sweetened soda pop, chocolate, too many carbs and refined flour products, etc. Eat more greens and veggies, more fruits, whole grains. Cut out the coffee cream, caffeine, alcohol. Dont use sweeteners, they are deadly! (ant poison I hear) and if you love soda pop, drop them completely, sugar or sweetener types! You will notice that you start slimming down without any over excersion....
