Even before I was a Christian, when I hadn't given the idea of an afterlife any thought whatsoever, I still spent time out of my day for my own enjoyment. Even if you believe that this life is the only one you have, you aren't going to want to spend that life constantly *doing*. An important part of life for all of us is being able to take time out for ourselves.
Anyway, its their 70-some years. Let them spend it as they please. Personally, I'm thankful for the variety they bring. :)

Dear Jonathan, 27.05.2007
It is certain, you are a nice person, with a no-nonsense attitude.
The answer lies in your question itself.
Perhaps just as you found time to put up the question, there will be some who feel they can answer. But I am sure no answer will satisfy you.
The reason, you do not seek answers from anyone!
Being an Athiest or not is an entirely different level of thinking, poles apart.
Moreover, being an Athiest is not a crime. This applies to the Followers of God.
In my opinion, all the people in this world are right, in their own way of thinking. Nobody has the right to make opinion on others. Just as I have no right to comment on your question.
Maybe if you remove the dead crust that covers your thinking process and expose and share it with others, your questions will have a more human approach, with love and concern to those around us.
Be alert and positive.

Of course life if precious, but it doesn't mean I'm going to spend every waking hour living my life to the fullest. Sure, it's a waste of time sitting here for hours, but I enjoy it, so who cares?
You can actually learn a lot from this site. Obviously there are a lot of stupid questions and answers (which are usually entertaining) but there are also some great ones.

The category is "Religion and Spirituality", not, "Believers in Religion and Spirituality". Something is very wrong with a God Concept that has taken over 100 million lives from religion/sectarian violence and encourages the followers to ignore the never ending genocide. Remember that one day History will say, "They killed over 100 million people in the name of God and everyone looked the other way. What was wrong with those people?"

Sorry, I was just doing this because I'm taking a break from mountain climbing, traveling the world, saving people's lives....etc.
Oh wait.....I'm broke. I can't afford to do all the crap I'd like to be doing, so yeah, I'm wasting my time answering your question because I have nothing better to do. Got a problem with that?

I would like to correct one misconception. We do not 'believe in nothing.' We believe a great many things.
I would bet as many if not more than you do. I believe we evolved from lower life forms for example. I also believe the universe is infinitely more interesting with facts that can be learned and mysteries that can be solved than to just accept that it is all here by magic.

Thanks to your new rule, Geezah, I'm going to need a new liver. Not to mention, another bottle of scotch!
To the questioner: If, everywhere you looked, you noticed everyone else was carrying on conversations with someone who wasn't there, wouldn't you try to question one of them? Or at least tell one of them that they are really talking to themselves?
Now enter the real world. People aren't just talking to themselves, but insisting that their imaginary friend demands various types of insane things from all of us. Because of their imaginary friends, all of us who DON'T talk to people that aren't there now have new rules to live by, since the delusional people have their fingers in everybody elses' pies. What we can hear or read. What's acceptable to wear, say, or do in public. What our children learn about in school. What's more, these imaginary friends demand recruitment! So those of us WITHOUT imaginary friends now have to deal with door to door salesmen "of the spiritual world." That's right--for the price of reason, we can ALL have imaginary friends!
To make matters worse, in order to protect their imaginary friends, these people create a great many myths and outright falsehoods about those of us who prefer living in reality.
We're just trying to bring some sanity to an insane world. That's as simple as it gets.

While I realize, as a believer in gods & monsters, you're only trying to help...what's it to you how I choose to spend my time, Mr. Xian? Btw, wouldn't a better use of your time be praying to or for something?

I'm not arguing. I'm having fun, which isn't a waste of time.
Are you implying that people who have a religious belief think it's fine to waste time because there's an afterlife?

Damn I miss that "thumbs down" feature for lame questions...
Seriously, did this Q not pop up like a million times as having been asked before when you were typing it?
Go read those answers.
