Okay. My favorite car is in possession of a lienholder. I just found out that my father can still claim the car and the fee is affordable. Can anyone tell me what does he need to get the car out? Does he need insurance, driver's license, or anything else? Oh, and can we pay with debit card? Thanks.

If your car is in possession of the lienholder, you will have to satisfy the lienholder to get your car back. At a minimum, you will have to pay the lienholder what you currently owe on the car; the lienholder may insist that you pay off the entire loan. Only the lienholder can tell you if s/he accepts a debit card. Since a debit card is like cash, there's a good chance, but you'll have to ask.

The lienholder would rather have money than the car, so paying whatever the lienholder requires should be enough to get your car back. However, I don't know where you live and therefore don't know what the laws require there. If the law requires that the lienholder not release the car without proof of insurance, then you'll need to show that. You shouldn't need a driver's license to claim the car, as you can always have it towed to your your home. If it comes down to that, have a friend with a license drive the car to your home.

Good luck!

You can get your car back if you settle the outstanding debt plus they will charge you handling fees.. You must have a loan on the car that was not paid.. Your father can't claim the car because he is not the registered owner of it. and if you still have a loan on it in your name you can't sell or give the car to anyone unless you pay off your loan. even though you are the resitered owner the people who financed it have a lein on it that would alert the motor vehicle dept if you try to change ownership. You may be able to pay by debit card but usually it's a cash only deal...
