They would be able to understand you however they cannot speak spanish they understand it. they may respond to you in Portugese

well their language is portugese, so yeah. you might get a few people who get the gist of what you are saying, but don't expect for everyone or even the majority to understand you. if you are going on vacation, like a week and half or less i wouldn't worry about it too much, maybe just learn some important phrases, but if you are going to be down there longer, i would definatley make an effort to learn some portuguese. good luck! it's a lot like spanish so it will probably be pretty easy for you to pick it up.

It would be a waste of time if you decided to go to Quebec instead. Then again, learning a 2nd language is never a waste of time. May I suggest English?
